Why 5.1 quart jugs?

   / Why 5.1 quart jugs? #21
Most of our oil containers here are 5.0 litres now. Both the last Castrol 5w20 and the Kubota 10w30 I bought was in 5 litre jugs. Previous to that it was in 4.4 litre jugs.

I have been buying Deere oil in 5 gallon containers. Much cheaper.
My old empty 5 qt containers get filled with oil as needed and I use the empty 5 gallon containers for waste oil.

Wife used to take her car (now MINE) to dealership for oil changes, well the manual calls for 4.5 quarts. After a few changes I noticed invoice for oil changes read "Quantity 10" (half-quarts) @ $1.00 per half-quart. Took invoices to service department and told them either they were overfilling the engine by a half quart or cheating customers by selling them for half-quart not actually put in engine. They would not give me a straight answer so I went to dealership owner with papers and he said I am sorry let me give you the next two oil changes for free, well I told him I wasn't returning for ANY reason and you know what you can do with your free oil changes, you and service manager both. Frickin' crooks. I know they were charging for the half quart not actually added.

Are you sure the 4.5 capacity includes the filter?

Gee sounds very confusing!!!!! It very simple here!
1 liter
5 liter
20 liter
200 liter
Or bulk, by the liter!
All the companies/brands are the same across the whole country!

Sounds like the US needs to move to the 20th century and become metric ;)

POSITIVE.....!!!!!!! When I change the oil and filter and use the same AC/Delco the service place used, the recommended 4.5 quarts added makes the dipstick read full. Owners manual also states 4.5 refill with filter. (GM 3.8 liter V6)

Oh, and for what it is worth, I am the OP on this thread, and the Meijers store is now CLOSING OUT the the GALLON jugs of oil, so perhaps the 5.1 is the wave of the future.

Around here 2 of the 2.5 gallon jugs are about .25 more than 1 five and a lot easier to handle.

Totally agree. In 1980, President Carter told us in middle school that it was going to happen any day now. Still waiting...

My Jeep had a nice mix of SAE, metric, and torx fasteners.

For an example, Pennzoil conventional oil per gallon was $12.59, now $10.59. Mobil 1 Full Synthetic was $20.99 per gallon, now $17.99. Quaker State conventional was $9.99 per gallon, now $$7.99. Others have identical savings, however, the disclaimer says Royal Purple, 2-stroke oil, and diesel oil gallons are excluded from sale.

First car I ever purchased that had metric fasteners was a '79 Ford Fairmont, if I recall right, the majority of nuts and bolts that were metric were painted a lime green color...

Just offhand, are Torx fasteners considered SAE or Metric?

Well it partially went metric, I had a 83 gm truck and a 84 S-10 that were mixed metric parts on them. I did buy complete sets of metric craftsman tools to fit them. Then some parts went back to standard size. Jy.

Have always wished they had settled on ONE standard for threaded fasteners, EITHER SAE OR METRIC. Guess that would have been too simple.

I think the makers of the 5.1 qt jugs are just trying to be user friendly in todays competitive market.
The extra .1 is to cover the duffers that always spill some because they don't have a funnel.

Even the metric system has it's foibles.. European metric as opposed to Japanese metric drives me nuts. Slightly different pitch, but enough that it won't go together.

Maybe THAT explains why what Carter told us back in 1980 still hasn't happened...

I really have not had much experience with threaded fasteners that will not go together, except for one item...those hot-dipped galvanized bolts you can buy at Menards, well they are SAE thread, but becuz of the thickness of the galvanizing, you can ONLY thread nuts and bolts from Menards together that have the same galvanizing. Guess that is what Euro/Japanese metric must be like...force fitting until it burrs the threads.

Something like that.. a typical metric thread, for example, may be 8 x 1.50, which is an 8 mm fastener which has 1.50 mm between thread crests. If that's the European version, typical Japanese is 8 x 1.25, same 8mm diameter, but 1.25 mm between thread crests. Then there's metric coarse, metric fine, and metric extra fine, which is really the difference between Euro and Japanese threads.

Let's just say that owning a Honda and a Volkswagen would be an exercise in frustration for do-it-yourself guys.

We often get US quarts up here, 950ml bottles.

Theory 1: shipments are getting inverted (Canada/USA). Confused dispatchers, lost truckers ?

Theory 2: Manuf. are deliberately trying to confuse the many people out there who can't do basic arithmetic, hoping they will over-buy.

First vehicle I worked with mixed fasteners was a 78 Chev. Last one, a 2001 Ford. As a young pup, I thought it was a stupid idea in 1978, still do.

I have nothing against either system, just picking ONE would make a whole lot more sense, unless you have shares in tool companies.

 Things that make you go hhhhmmmmmm D.
