Why 5.1 quart jugs?

I really like the 5 quart containers, with their wide mouth and sturdy construction they are an ideal jug for storing used oil and recycling it.

I just wish the cars and trucks were a standard capacity. For example my 2 Powerstrokes take 15 QTS but the oil is sold in gallons so I have to buy 4 gallons, 16 QTS, and have a little left over.

My Nissan Titan take 6.5 QTS. I buy 5 QT jugs but then have 3.5 QTS left over. It takes forever to get back to a even quantity. Pain in the arse.

My boats take 5.5 QTS for one and 4.5 QTS for the other but I get the oil in gallons. Again, a pain.

My tractor take 6.0 QTS. A pain once again but at least on it 3 gallons will give me 2 even oil changes. Not so bad.

I wish they would make all cars 4 QTS. All truck gas trucks 6 QTS, and all diesels 12 or 16 QTS so it would work out for the larger containers and we could ditch the quarts.

Good point...when I started this thread I was saying my vehicles took 4.5, 5, or 6 quarts. The engines range from 3 to 6 liters, which seems odd, given the narrow range of oil fill capacity they have. It would be convenient to have a standard fill capacity as you describe, but by the time it happened, we would be too old to take advantage of it.

perhaps this is the start of future for short changing us? kinda like a 2X4 used to be 2 inch by 4 inch, but now its 1 1/2 by 3 1/2?

I buy the 15w40 motorcraft PSD oil at walmart if 5qt jugs.. works out great for a 15qt change for my PSD's..

ps.. 4.82l is 5.1q.. so nothing special there. was hoping it made it to 5l and that might have been a good explanation 5.28 qts = 5l.. so a 5.25 qt bottle might actually make sense..

Our local Meijers store is now advertising both conventional and synthetic motor oils in 5.1 quart containers. I have been buying Mobil 5W-30 at WallyWorld in a 5 quart jug for several years now. Exactly what is the purpose of selling such an odd size as 5.1 quarts? My 3 GM vehicles take 6 quarts, 5 quarts, or 4.5 quarts. By draining a half quart out of a 5 quart jug I have the proper fill for the car that takes 4.5. Why sell a 5.1 quart jug? The way they downsize product packaging today, I'm surprised they didn't reduce it to 4.9 quarts.

Perhaps these are 5 liter containers,maybe intended for the Canadian market?Think metric system.A quart equals .946 liters as I recall?

I really wonder how long ago a 2X4 measured that size, my house was built in 1949 but the studs are 3.5 X 1.5. My brother owned a Monkey Ward kit house that was built in 1923 and the studs were identical in size.

We always tip our jugs, no matter the size, on a tilt and let drain down to a bottom corner after emptying them the first time and then drain usually twice again same technique. I'd hate to say how much oil is wasted every year by people tipping jugs and draining them just once and tossing them in the trash.
