Why 5.1 quart jugs?

I just wish the cars and trucks were a standard capacity. For example my 2 Powerstrokes take 15 QTS but the oil is sold in gallons so I have to buy 4 gallons, 16 QTS, and have a little left over.

My Nissan Titan take 6.5 QTS. I buy 5 QT jugs but then have 3.5 QTS left over. It takes forever to get back to a even quantity. Pain in the arse.

My boats take 5.5 QTS for one and 4.5 QTS for the other but I get the oil in gallons. Again, a pain.

My tractor take 6.0 QTS. A pain once again but at least on it 3 gallons will give me 2 even oil changes. Not so bad.

I wish they would make all cars 4 QTS. All truck gas trucks 6 QTS, and all diesels 12 or 16 QTS so it would work out for the larger containers and we could ditch the quarts.

Agree...The wife's Hummer and my GMC both hold exactly 6 quarts...At least Generous Motors did something that you agree with...Sorry Chris, couldn't help myself. :D:D

My Kubotas are another story though.

And here I was thinking I was special and they made the 5.1 jugs for my car. Then you guys all go and blow my theory. :)

I just changed the oil in my old Range Rover this weekend and it takes 6.1 quarts so I buy an extra quart and put in exactly what the car requires.

I really have not had much experience with threaded fasteners that will not go together, except for one item...those hot-dipped galvanized bolts you can buy at Menards, well they are SAE thread, but becuz of the thickness of the galvanizing, you can ONLY thread nuts and bolts from Menards together that have the same galvanizing.

That is normal for galvanized bolts/nuts, not just at Menards. Threaded fasteners have different classes of "fit". By necessity galvanized requires a looser fit since the zinc adds dimension to fasteners.

First car I ever purchased that had metric fasteners was a '79 Ford Fairmont, if I recall right, the majority of nuts and bolts that were metric were painted a lime green color...

Just offhand, are Torx fasteners considered SAE or Metric?

Ford fairmont? In the US? wow, well probably metric as it was an Australian designed and built car, unless of course it was a rebadge over there!

Torx aren't either, I.e they are there own sizing

Yep, very smart but they never seem to get the drain plug right. I take care of 3 GM truck and all have the drain plug above the cross member where it makes a mess. All the other manufactures seem to get it right and if there is a issue with a mess like around the filters on all my Fords and Nissan they put a plastic funnel thing that directs the oil away.

I finally broke down and put drain valves on all 3 of the GM's here in the last few month. That a and a piece of hose keeps the mess down.

My boats are mostly GM powered and one with Twin Volvo's. The Volvo's use 5 QTS. Smart. The GM's, same motors, different years, have one taking 5.5 QTS and the newer one taking 4.5 QTS. Drives me nuts.

Around here 2 of the 2.5 gallon jugs are about .25 more than 1 five and a lot easier to handle.

i heard that!

course.. you can just keep a clean 2.5g jug and get the 5g jugs and refill with a pump.. but it takes longer. .25 ain't much difference.. will have to check the spread there.

Tractor supply had the best price on Rotella-t 15w40 this spring in my area with the 2 jugs at the same basic price as the pail. The had 2 jug cases, or 2 jugs in a box.

I do keep a clean 5 gallon and a pump for those times when pumping is better than pouring (trans change and such).
