Gun Rack???

I couldn't agree more. It is just a lot more unlikely to have a bear attack down here because they are so scarce. I am much more likely to be bitten by an alligator than a bear. I am guessing that being bitten by an alligator while bushhogging is not a big concern where you live.

Oh yeah... lots of alligators here, but they turn into Allisicles in the winter, so they are easier to shoot before they defrost :D

my 2 cents on the armament, I think you would be well served with the shotgun, 12 guage and either slugs or 00 buckshot.. I also think a pump or semi-auto will do. and for a tractor gun, I would go with pump. for several reasons.
1: price. pump guns are usually cheaper than semi-autos
2: a tractor gun is going to collect grime, a pump is a little more forgiving of
dirt, and assorted filth.
3: more reliable overall especially with mixed loads of lower powered shells, and higher power ones.

I would keep it chamber empty on the tractor, with internal striker/hammer down, so it would not need to be "unlocked" to jack a shell in the chamber really quick, but be safe. ...
but still for a knock-about gun, I would go with a pump gun like an Remington 870 or Winchester 1300 or Mossberg 500 or something even older, but still in sound shape. Well that was more like 50 cents than 2 cents, but there you go.

Thanks for the tips. I got similar advice at the farm store I went to for a quick intro to get-oriented and figure this out. They said the same points about being stone simple reliable on the pumps. They only had like one semi auto on hand. Said they just don't sell many. I think that is the route I will go in the end here.

I am thinking that one of the shorter barrels that they said were considered "home defense" shotguns might be the right choice. Easier to find a place to store them and more maneuverable. Plus then it can become a home defense gun once we build out there.

Thanks,
Dave

Pump Shotguns are pretty nice. You can get a Mossberg Persuader (sometimes called "The Defender") with a full length tube holding 7 rounds.
Like K0ua, I keep a few in the tube, nothing in the chamber.

Pistol Grip shotties are easy to maneuver, but shooting one isn't much fun and you really can't aim one.
Now, standard stocks with a pistol grip...that's a nice way to dress a shotgun!

yep, now I will back Roy up, try to get one with a stock , not JUST a pistol grip, as like he said they are harder to hit with, believe it or not you can miss pretty easy, even with a shotgun, it ain't like the movies where it blows a hole in a door you can walk thru. uh, uh. not so big. If you can find one, a black synthetic stock is the way to go for a tractor gun, easy to wipe down, and they don't get that banged up wood look. I have an old Mossberg 500 with an aftermarket synthetic stock and a winchester 1300 synthetic. Both good reliable guns. I think you are "on target" with good advice. Welcome to the world of gun ownership.. Oh. don't forget eye and hearing protection in your practice sessions. Keep your hearing, and you never know, eye protection is a good thing. You gotta do what you gotta do if you really need it to defend, and you wont hear it anyway, if you are extremely stressed, as a phenomena called "auditory exclusion" takes over. But in practice please wear the safeguards. and please practice. You can use the cheap wal-mart on sale shells for practice, but be sure and shoot some of the real-deal self defense loads to know how they will pattern, and feel. Good luck, and post back if you have any other questions.

Just a note here, not everyone can handle a short barrel 12 gauge very well, so a longer barrel .12 or short barrel .20 gauge might be a better option.

Just like buying tractors I would advise to try before you buy.

My son was a Firearms Instructor for Military, Police and the private sector and many times people would come in with a gun recommended by an "expert" that they simply could not control.

My .12 gauge Beretta hasn't been out of my safe in years as while the first shot would be dead on the second would be from the prone position and present a danger to aircraft.

What TripleR said is extremely important.

I had an FFL for a few years and sold to every kind of person.

Some would come in knowing what they wanted and could handle and order or buy that certain firearm.

Others would come in never having handled or fired a firearm, and they would always want me to pick out a firearm for them to buy.

No way...I was not going to do that.

I did however hold a few "come out and shoot" events at a local range where I had a variety of firearms available to try before you buy.

I was really shocked at the people who never touched a firearm come in and want to buy a hand gun because they were taking the concealed carry class....scary....isn't it.

I always recommend that anyone find a friend or a range that rents guns and try different ones out.

I don't think that it is silly, dumb or stupid for carrying a weapon. My reason for carrying one isn't for shooting snakes or pigs. I have a black panther that lives on the back side of my property and he can scare the living daylights out of you when you aren't expecting him. I don't have a gun rack on either of my machines but I carry (with CCL) a 9mm strapped to my leg the whole time I am back there. I really don't care how uncomfortable the gun feels as long as I am protected.

I know this sounds like a crazy question, but has anyone rigged up a gun rack attached to the ROPS? :D

I am having a hard time controlling snakes near a lake where I have some property, and need to keep a shotgun on the tractor if possible so that I can kill the devils when I am cutting brush. I am thinking about getting a 4-wheeler gun rack mount or something similar, and attaching it to the ROPS with u-bolts or something.

Has anyone done such a thing or am i just a certified nut? If you have done so, pics would be nice!!

Here's my setup...........

I think you mean "supine", i.e. face-up. "Prone" is face-down, at which point you're endangering earthworms

since supine is lying on the back.. .. which I've never shot from a supine position..I'd prefer prone.. ie.. laying on the chest, head up, and arms out front.. a VERY VERY common shooting position when shooting from a mat, and preventing low profile.
