Your towing rigs and trailers

Jesse1,
Nice trucks (both of them). Here are a few pics of an old autocar and international fleetstar that I was hauling. Not to a show though. These were on their way to the scrap yard. The autocar would have been nice to restore. But, it was well beyond my means and my aunt said it had to leave the farm!! That was my '01 Powerstroke that I was hauling them with. The scales at the yard read 29,500lbs.

Also, are a few photos of my '06 powerstroke with various loads. I have nothing against the silverado and ram, but all of my powerstrokes have done the deed and then some. The 7.3 is so far my favorite engine. But, even my 6.0 wasn't afraid to work. Both were 6spd manuals with airbags on the rear, a K&N intake on the '01 and an aFE intake on the '06. I kept my superchips programmer set at either the tow-safe or economy mode. I now have a 2012 F450 on order for when I return from Afghanistan. Let's see what the 6.7 is capable of. As you can see, I got plenty of work for it :licking:.

Oh yeah, I thought I'd include a few more of my Freightliner Classic for the 'Big Truck Drivers' out there

SLHawkins,
What size is your dump trailer? Looks like the size I want to buy.
hugs, Brandi

Thats some rig. I was hauling about 14000# with a 20+5 Gatormade gooseneck like that one, and a srw Superduty. I had to buy a DRW truck, to be legal on the roads. I don't know where your from, but I would be in a world of hurt if I got caught with that load in the peoples republic of New York.

Brandi,
It is a Texas Bragg 6'x14' 7-ton dump trailer. That load of gravel in the photos was a little over 6 tons. It hauled and dumped it with no problems. Although, I gave myself plenty of stopping distance!!:D

How do you like the Giehl baler? My cousin let me borrow his last summer to finish out my fields. My NH baler is old and worn. If I had his from the get go, I would have had the fields down in less than half a day. I went from manual wind and cut to full electric. It was like going from the middle ages to the industrial revolution:laughing:

BTW, nice rig and equipment! How long is your trailer? Mine is a 35' deck with 5' dovetail. Plus, another 8' up on the neck.

I'll have to find the photo, but I hauled the big IH1566, along with the batwing, in my photos from Delaware back home to Virginia on my gooseneck. I had to dismount the outer duals, but was able to stack them on the deck up front. I did not realize, until I got back to the farm, that the tractor by itself is 12 tons. And, this is before the addition of the duals and the batwing. I used the freightliner to haul that load. I wasn't about to put that much weight on my powerstroke. Plus, I am sure the DE, MD, and VA DOT would have had a field day with me and all that wieght behind a 'pick-up truck':confused2:

Gotta love those "horns" on the SD!

And, make no mistake, they are not just for show!! Those are fully functional, lanyard operated, air horns. More than a few unfortunate travellers, as well as, some downright knuckleheads got an earful for not paying attention:D

I am in South Ms, the DOT leaves the farmers along. The field that I was going to was only 10 mi away. I don't like going much more than that with the loader up like that. The weight is not a problem, this trailer stops and handles better with 20,000# on it than my 13,000# fith wheel. It is 35' with 12,000# Dexter's under it.

MY dump trailer has a box that is 2 ft high and 7x12 ft width and length which is just a tad over 6 cubic yards. The MFG sticker rates the max added load at 6200 lbs. It came with a pair of 5000 lb axles with 16 inch rims and load range E tires (3525 lbs max load.)

The load sharing spring arrangement works fine going down the road but... when you dump a lot more weight is on the rear axle than the front. So when I bent the rear axle I replaced them both with 7000 lb axles and kept the same wheels and tires and had a decent safety margin. What I could have done is to have gone with 10,000 lb axles, 8 lug rims and load range G tires. Lots more safety margin but at considerable greater expense.

I will be adding some adjustable "props" to both sides of the frame at the rear so the extra weight of the up tilted load pushes on the props and the force is taken by the ground, not the rear axle and springs. That mod could have saved the OEM axles.

Most dump trailers have large enough boxes to let you easily overload them if you are carrying anything much denser than feathers. Gravel weighs in at about 2800 lbs or so per cu yd (dry.) My dump trailer will hold about 17,000 lbs of gravel but is rated for 6200 lbs of gravel. Significant overloading is easy to do if you aren't careful.

My Kubota Grand L4610HSTC fits into my dump trailer just fine which is quite handy (trailer has heavy duty ramps.)

Gravel and similar can vary considerably in weight per cu yd. Sand may be about 1.2 tons per cu yd and some gravel may run up to about 1.8 tons per cu yd. Err on the side of caution and avoid overloading. I had two of my original 4 tires go bad with over 90% of the tread left so I replaced them all. Another consideration is a good spare AND the means to change a tire on a loaded dump trailer. Think about the jack requirements and something to put under the jack to keep it from sinking in soft earth or hot blacktop or...

Overloaded must mean something different on Missouri. Clearly your overloaded there.

Matt

Hmmmmmm,,,, I don't know what my trailer weighs, someone said 9K lbs but I don't think that's right. I'd say closer to 4500. The tractor weighs around 6500. The buggy weighs 3400. The Rhino weighs 1200. So, I'm hauling 11,100 of cargo on a 5000 lb dual wheeled trailer, pulling it with a SD 250 SRW with 350 springs. The trailer has excellent brakes. I sure don't feel overloaded and it stops very well, have to turn the controller down to keep from sliding trailer wheels on gravel. As mentioned I might benefit from shuffling some of the weight off the truck?? But otherwise I don't see the problem. Check out the SD Dually hauling the antigue truck, he's squatted as bad or worse than I am. But hey,,,, I'm new to the big trailer world. :)
