Horse barn project

More framing today, we have trusses arriving tomorrow, and should have the roof on before the weekend if all goes well. I've attached a few pics showing the groove in the concrete where the suspended plank floor ends will sit.Sean

I have a friend whose wife use to make him sleep on the couch now and then.
While building his barn,he added a man cave to it and put the couch in it.
The good ole boy told me his wife never put him out of their bedroom again.
In fact on most nights before bed I'am told she brings him hot-coco/milk and cookies.

Yeah,

The trouble here is, it's HER barn, not mine. If anything, she'd get mad at me, banish me to the bedroom, and sleep quite happily in the barn... some days yer just better off staying in bed anyway.

Loosely translated, where women are concerned, you can't win, especially if you win.

Someone told me that about poplar, it slipped my mind I guess. If I can find some I may try it this time, we've got a couple local guys that mill rough cut lumber. Come to think of it, we've got a couple big poplars that I was going to cut anyway, if they're solid we might use them.

Sean

Not sure about today's day and age but popular was all that was used in my region for barns. Apparently it weathers very well.

Another laid-back day of framing, I kinda like this pace. I've done jobs before where it was go-go-go from dawn til dark. It's ok a day at a time like that, but the next day is usually a write off at my age. I'm not ancient, but it's not what I'm used to doing either. We have 12 more trusses to sit tomorrow, then bracing and sheet the roof in and order steel for it.

Nice guys to work with, really nice. They can tell how much I know (or don't!) and are willing to take the time to explain why things are done that way. I'm not a bad carpenter most days, but framing isn't something I've done a lot of in the past.

We got the boarding-in finished today, attached the fascia boards, and strapped the inside ceiling. Supposed to be a rainy weekend, looks like I'll get a couple days off from building.

The steel for the roof is going to be a week or two coming, I don't think they had the colour we wanted in stock.

In the meantime, the cladding on the fascias and the soffit's will get done, as well as starting to shingle the exterior. We're using cedar shingles to match the house. 50 bundles should do it unless I have more waste than usual.

Once it dries up after the rain this weekend, I'll add some more backfill as it's started to settle already.

Yesterday was attaching hurricane ties to the trusses, and started on soffits and fascias. By the time we got done it was too dark for pictures, as was tonight.

Today should be "fun".. we're attaching lattice over the Tyvek house wrap to allow air circulation under the cedar shingles we're using. Hateful stuff to cut, a circ saw with the blade mounted backwards seems to do not too bad a job.

I think we'll add a separate thread in Rural Living about the horses, Boone. It's a story all to itself, we have three generations of the same genetic thread living here at the moment (two of which are ours), and we're pretty pleased with all three. Maybe the next rainy day I'll get a chance to do that, it's something I've wanted to do for a while.
