A good day of progress today. The guys finished up cladding the fascias, and we got about 60% of the barn wrapped in Tyvek and lattice. Got a late start on the corner boards, with the weather starting to get wet called it a day.

We used "privacy" pressure treated lattice (1.25" openings) for the bottom foot to allow a nice smooth start with the shingles, then transitioned to regular PT stuff (2.6 openings) for the rest of the way up.

The bottom edge is wrapped in insect netting to discourage them from making their way up into the lattice and building nests.

We used 2x4 and 2x6 cedar for the corner boards, by the time you build out two layers of shingles it makes for a nice job. We did the house the same way, so we're trying to keep some consistency between the two buildings.

Tomorrow I'll make some flashings for over doors and windows. I have one more doorway to clad in metal, but the main floor has to be poured first so I have a level to work with.

Soon time to start shingling! Some people find it tedious, but for me it's a simple job and easy on the head. Lots of time to think while you're working, and lots of fresh air and sunshine too. Right now my garage has 50 bundles of cedar shingles in it, wonderful smell when you walk in the door.

Be sure to put up a sign for the horses that says "No kicking" so they don't damage your work. I love shingles too, can't wait to see finished project.

The horses we have are pretty well behaved, although the father of one and grand-father of the other has been known to boot a wall or two for the fun of it. He was "Alpo Horse of the Week" candidate after that episode...

The bay is 5 years old, and the chestnut is 17. The chestnut has been there and done that, rides English, Western and drives like a dream. The youngster is well under saddle by now, and she wants to start him driving next year most likely.

We usually wait until they're at least 4 before we do any serious under-saddle work with them, they mature quite late by some standards and they're not ready either physically or mentally until then. The flip side of that is you've got a good horse until they're in their 30's usually.

On the barn side of things, the morning was devoted to picking up some more material, then we added some more lattice and started bending metal for over windows, etc. We put a 5 degree bevel on the top edge of the 2x4 over each window and doorway to help shed water, then flash over it in metal.

I haven't done that for a few years, but watching the other guys doing the fascias brought a lot of it back to me.

We have a bit more Tyvek wrap and lattice to do and one more set of corner boards to put up, some more exterior window and door trims and metal cladding, then the shingling starts in earnest. Picked up 7000 stainless staples this morning, I expect it'll take almost twice that to finish the job.

Hi Chilly,

Looks great! I've never seen lattice put on like that though. Is that just for airflow or something behind the siding?

Hi Chilly,

It's in the building code now that any solid siding on an occupied structure (shingles, wood siding, etc) must have an airspace behind it to allow water to drain if any gets in, to my understanding.

Our house is built the same way. When I asked the building inspector about lattice on the barn, he told me while I didn't have to do it that way by code, he would recommend doing it. The shingle maker also recommends it to allow their product to stay dry and last longer.

Their are several products on the market now, but lattice is by far the cheapest at $7 for 32 sq. feet.

The lattice is finally finished, and we're on to shingling. I bought a used Hitachi 7/16 crown sheathing stapler last weekend, and used it last night and today. Seems to work fairly well, although not as smooth as the Senco we used on the house 3 years ago.

We're about 7 bundles into the job, I'm hoping to have that part done within a week or so if the weather holds and I don't get sidetracked by something else.

We used 2nd clear shingles for the undercourse, and "B" clear for the actual exposed parts. 1.5" stainless staples hold them on, with a 5" exposure.

The little green guy is a luna moth that stayed over at the site on Friday night. I'd never seen one before.

We use wooden shipping pallets to avoid this problem. They work great and when you are done with them, they are great for the burn pile/outdoor fire ring.:D

Wooden pallets under hay is also a good place for a skunk nursery. We had to do away with the pallets.
