Through the hood exhaust, 3320 cab, good idea?

ok i see 1 or 2 things that need addressing here.1 most all old tractors have an up right exhaust coming out of the hood.1a ive seen 1 or 2 old tractors with the exhaust coming out from under the tractors.an yes those will cause fires.years ago i know a guy that was raking with a MF65 an putting 4 or 5 windrows into 1.an his tractor caught on fire an burned because the exhaust was under the tractor.2 on my 2010 MX5100 the exhaust comes out on the front left side.but its in front of the motor an not under the tractor.

To clarify what I'm looking to find out is, in order of impotance. On a 3320 cab tractor:

1) Does the low mount exhaust exit cover the front mount snowblower/rotary brush with soot as it does to the loader mount, loader arm, hood and front wheel? I know I might risk being a little OC about it but I have learned from experence that Diesel soot is not good for paint or zinc plating so I would rather avoid it if I could.

2) More important is the visability to the bucket/forks with the exhaust stack in place? Does it block your view?

3) Again, more important, does the exhaust stack increase or decrease the tendency that the cab HVAC system will pull in fumes?

Edit: Note this unit will not be used for haying or for rough mowing. It's main uses are loader work, (both dirt and moving pallets) tilling and snow blowing in the winter. It may be pressed on to finish mow an acre of lawn around the house from time to time.

I had a JD 3720 with cab.

1. I did not have a snowblower or rotary broom but I can't see soot getting that far forward with a horizontal exhaust. The soot I had with the horizontal exhaust was just on the loader/axle and near the exhaust.

2. No significant change in visiblity. You will get use to it and not even notice it. The size is small enough the impact on visibility is marginal to none.

3. I have never noticed any fumes in the cab with horizontal or vertical exhaust. Fumes next to the machine when working outside near the loader is vastly greater with horizontal exhaust. Fumes with working inside a building is much more noticeable with horizontal exhaust. Those were the 2 main reasons I got the vertical exhaust. I have driven a lot of tractors (ag, CUT, utility) with cabs and vertical exhaust. Fumes in the cab has never been an issue.

Lotsa those little N fords exhausted via an under-tractor horizontal pipe. I had a vertical exhaust (and gears) on my old 790 and it seems I was forever worried about tearing it off on tree branches. I guess this is a non-event if you have a cab.

Although, like Roy, I liked the manly aspects of the vertical tube :laughing:....I now appreciate the exhaust venting below the hood. And....I like the hyrdo tranny too. Wow.....am I losing my masculinity? :confused2:

From MY2008 onward, the 3x20 series engines must comply with IT4 emission requirements. Before that, there may have been soot from the exhaust. Not so on the new ones. Matter of fact, couple more years and they'll have particulate filters too. So as I apparently didn't make this clear earlier, soot from a new 3320 should be a non-issue.

hi greg, don't bet on it. on my 2010 3520/300cx the lower left leg of the parking stand on the loader is pretty black with diesel exhaust and when i have the 366 front blade on in the winter and you wipe the back side of the blade the rag can get a little black also. i painted the blade jd yellow.......bud

Don't think you'd be happy with the outcome of that bet. Instead, I suggest you contact your dealer. Post 2007 models aren't supposed to do that. Even if you're off regular warranty, fixing that should be covered under the much longer emission systems warranty.

Unless you've been tweaking on the engine yourself that is.......

Let's remain rational, this is not Harry Potter, burning diesel is dirty !
My 2009 3520 deposits a lot of soot on the left loader stand, as might be expected.
Apart from that, my previous open sration tractor had a vertical exhaust almost as manly as DSK, getting caught in branches and barn doors all the time (and sending fumes in my face when the wind was right) so that the lower left exhaust on the open station Deere came as a Godsend. On no account will I go back to the cumbersome vertical exhaust system.

One of the reasons I moved up from my 2009 2520 was the smell and mess from the underhood exhaust. We've had lengthy conversations about this. I would get physically sick from the exhaust and my clothes stunk after a couple of hours.
A vertical pipe was a mandatory for my 3320. Does it cut down on smell and soot? About 90% especially if you're on and off the tractor moving brush or stones.
In fact I forgot about the problem until I read this post. My 2520 had soot all over the front of the left side and it stunk. Then there is the carcinogenic aspect of diesel.
Moving the pipe to check the engine is not a problem. Think about how many times you're under the hood. The new battery is sealed and the oil is checked without opening the hood. So when do you have to pull a hot pipe? I never had the problem.
Get the vertical exhaust, that's my vote.

Simple logic, which system allows more soot to get to the driver? Do I get a wiff now and then when the wind is blowing? Not very often. Does the pipe hit tree limbs when I'm mowing near the edge of my fields? Not enough to make me wish I was smelling exhaust. We're not growing organic vegetables so I can get sick from 4 or 5 hours of exhaust.

I have a 3320 that I bought used with it. I don't notice it when operating the loader and don't smell any exaust in the cab when running the heat or A/C.
