Your posting and your signature seem to be at odds with each other, at least in my feeble mind.

Freedom is taking the responsibility to do what is right and/or necessary with out anyone having to tell you! Don't wear a seatbelt or a helmet because it's the law, wear them because it is the right thing to do!:2cents:

The tag is meant more for being taxed to death or to use light bulbs that are impractical, or even try to tell me that your inbred village is going to raise my child. I have no issues with the government "telling" me to do something I did well before it became feel good legislation. If you read a post I made early on in this thread, you'll understand.

You'll also notice the one accident listed with a minor injury to the face, the cop actually says "lucky he was wearing a helmet" or something along those lines.

I'm in the motorcycle accessory business and I own numerous motorcycles and I live in a helmet mandatory state.

If I didn't I'd still wear a well fitting full face helmet because it's my noodle and my choice.

I prefer to have it choice, but that in itself don't diminish the fact that I will wear a lid no matter what.

If you have a 5 dollar noodle and you wear a 5 dollar helmet, or no helmet, your choice. Mine (head) has limitless value so I spend accordingly on helmets.

......and no, I don't wear a seat belt when operating either of my tractors. I do in my cars, not the tractors. I'm in a fully enclosed ROPS structure and I'm comfortable with that, again, my choice and a choice I can live with.

So your OK with some buffoon telling you that you have to where a helmet but not OK with that buffoon telling you what kind of light bulb to use?

I am sure there are many out there that would think using the wrong bulb is just as stupid as not wearing a helmet.

Not using the "proper" light bulb won't kill you.

I'm all in favor of those who ride should decide, but they should also understand that the state can and will take every piece of property they own to pay for their hospital/longterm rehab/nursing care and they should have to have longterm health insurance. Why should I have to pay taxes to pay for someones 30 year nursing home stay because they chose not to wear a helmet?

Friend of mine right out of high school wrecked his bike, spent 20 years in a nursing home, 24 hour care until he died last year. "We" had to foot the bill.

No helemts are good for my business, we scrape them up all the time, but I hate to see a 20 year old kid headed for the hospital knowing he'll never walk, talk, chew or take a bm on his own again. What a waste.

I guess we all need to decide how much we're willing to loose.

I see you're a firefighter. What profession (or volunteer) sees more of what can happen when things go wrong? For a number of years, I was active in our volunteer dept. Also served on the board of directors for a time. About the time I felt the need to retire, we were in the midst of conforming to Homeland Security regs, as well as upgrading to meet new state regs. One of the new changes was having firefighters carry a monitor to let them know about exposure to poisonous gas vapors (mainly Hydrogen Cyanide, most commonly emmited from burning plastics) Most of the old school guys balked at the idea. They were used to pulling off the Scott Air Pack once the heavy smoke was cleared. After all, what harm in a little smoke, huh? It's that age old concept of "It won't happen to ME".

Funny how the mind works....The more you expose yourself to danger, the more you can convince yourself that you're 10' tall and bullet proof.

I've been a pallbearer for way too many of my friends funerals to entertain those thoughts any longer.

For the record, only 2 firefighters that were killed in the line of duty, both in vehicle accidents on the way to a fire scene.

The list of friends killed on bikes goes way into the double digits. All but one was closed casket....for reasons that helped form my opinions expressed in this thread.

Safety equipment is available for a reason. They extend the time before someone has to write a persons obit....

Lets see... you have a perfectly good lightbulb that gives good, clean light. Then, you realize all those 5 million dollar pinwheels you put on every scenic vista in America can't supply enough power, so you mandate a more expensive, dirtier to produce, full of toxic chemicals, light that puts out a pale glow "akin to a russian stairwell" along with other possible health destructive byproducts.

That, is the wrong bulb.

I have no issue with being told to do something that works, and I have been doing since before nannyism made it look cool. I do have an issue with being told to forget common sense, throw away something practical, and replace it with a piece of garbage. There's a pretty distinct difference in the two topics.

CFL's work. They save tons of energy. They provide adequate light. There is very little cost difference between a premium incandescent bulb for a brand name CFL. They're an intern until LED's come down in price and become more common. And most importantly, they save YOU money.

And before you say colour index and slow startup... there are bulbs that address that...

1.CFL's are available in various colour indices just like the 8' tubes of old. A little research will show you what bulb will give which temperature light.

2. Different manufactures bulbs come to full brightness at different rates. I like Sylvania, they light very fast. Personally i hate Phillips CFL's, yet i love their LED's.

3. GE? has a combo Halogen/ flour that starts on halogen (full brightness instantly) then shifts to fluorescent after ~30 sec for the times you need instant on yet you want efficiency for a light that gets left on.

4. There are Halogen high efficiency incandescent bulbs now available.. not as efficient as the pure fluorescent but higher brightness and instant on with excellent colour properties.

Oh, and the mercury thing is a red herring, or maybe a tuna..... Eating a can of tuna would expose you to more mercury than breaking a bulb.... AND that doesn't even include the additional mercury released from burning the extra coal that could be saved with more efficient lighting.

But as i said, LED is the answer and CFL is just an interim to get us moving in the proper direction. Within 10 years, i think CFL will be just as much a dinosaur as incandescent is today.
