The divining method of backing up until you get stuck in in mud seems much more scientific.

There are PVC locators, but it is not based on wishful thinking. They use something called a thumper or knocker to send pulses through the PVC pipe and use a sensitive microphone to pick up the pulses. They say the range could be as great as 1000 ft.

Uggh...the Randi group has already been discussed....here's my thoughts.

I don't know if it's splitting hairs or not, but I think there's a difference between dowsing for water and locating under ground items, and in previous posts discussed that.

The Randi challenge is a joke anyway. No matter what an applicant does, he will insist they cheated, (and will probably be right), and then refuse to pay on that basis.

How do you cheat, it's either there or not there.

To those that believe in the principle, why are there no test to prove it works every time.

None of this I think it works crap. I saw someone do it one time. I did it once, with a special stick. Granny could do it, but she would not take money. It has to be a fresh peach Y branch. Welding rod is the proven choice, etc.

Before metal, what did they use, a feeling?

Sorry, I was not necessarily referring to using divining for the Randi challenge.

Divining apparently does not work every time. But then, neither does any other locating device.

hmm.. I say dig out the ground penetrating radar.. or a ultrasound or a 12ga sonar device..

Was shown how to do this when young with a couple of L bent coat hangars. Only used it while passing over a large nail or metal object. Haven't done it in years. Never tried to find any water lines with it. May have to try it and see if it will work over a cold beer...
