Over weight? You should be shot! I don't think the boat is tied down correctly either.

Its tied down good but yes, I am overweight. Guess I will have to move some it to the truck so I am not towing that 180# lol

I should be shot.

Actually I have now towed it over 800 miles in 5 different trips with the Titan and I am very impressed. It will run 58mph at 1600 rpm with the tow haul mode. 70mph is 2400 rpm. It has gotten right at 9.3 to 9.4 mpg towing it. Dropping to 68mph from 70mph will get it down to 2200 rpm.

Its heavier than I though originally. I had calculated 9,200# and really thought it would come in at 8,800# because I was so generous with the weights. I was really surprised Friday when I weighed it.

Now the boat probably does not get 3mpg. I do not want to know.

Just a quick update. I have now pulled the boat at its current weight about 3,000 miles and have average a solid 9.5mpg The truck will run 60mph at 1600rpm with little or no down shifting.

Here is the kicker. I was doing a brake and bearing job on a 27' Bumper Pull camper. It has a slide and the owner told me it weighed 6,800# empty. The max GVWR according to the sticker is 10,400#. It had 2 ALKO 5,200# axles under it and there was quite a bit of stuff in the camper. He estimated the weight at 9,000 with water and such. I pulled it to my shop, about 35 miles each way and average 8.4mpg

The weight felt the same as the boat but man, you could feel the wind drag. It downshifted lots more, even at just over passes and need 1900 rpm versus 1600 rpm for the boat that weighed more.

I really have very little experience pulling box trailers/campers but have tons of experience pulling every other type of trailer for a couple hundred thousand miles. They are awful to pull. I do not envy you guys who tote them around.

They get heavy quick and mine's only 4600lbs empty 7700lbs GVWR and around 6500-7000lbs loaded. It's so tall, I actually thought about one of those air deflectors for the roof of my truck but don't tow it enough to make it worth it.

Crosswinds are the most difficult up here in the mountains.

Funny you talk about the air deflectors. My neighbor that I talk about so much with the 3500 Dmax and a 35' 5th wheel just bought one in May. His truck gets every drop of fuel logged because he is self employed, commercial mower. He insisted on one and I had my doubts. I have a degree in Aerospace so I had a gut feeling the majority of the drag is on the back of the camper, not the front.

Anyway we fitted it a week before a trip to Florida in June. We did so because he wanted me to weld up a custom mount for bikes from its frame and also a bracket to hold a 5HP outboard motor for his Inflatable Zodiac.

Without the camper on for the week prior his MPG dropped 4 mpg. Yes, 4 mpg or 20% plus. He could not believe it so when he got back he left it on for a tank with the same results.

While towing the 35' 5th Wheel he lost 1 mpg. He has driven this route to property they have in Florida over 15 times with this camper and truck combo and has gotten just shy of 12 mpg, something like 11.8 mpg average. He was just able to squeak out 11 mpg with the deflector. He still likes it because it keeps the bugs off the front of the camper but other than that its a waste.

My take on it with the truck empty it creates such a wake behind the truck its all drag from that wake that is killing the MPG's, not its physical size. Same thing with the camper on. Its creating more wake where as without it there would be smoother more laminar flow from the windshield to the camper.

My guess is also his long bed truck is the worst combo. A short bed truck would do better with the camper and wing since there is less area between the two for this wake to form. If you look at a semi they are very closely coupled.

Long story short, at its cost its a waste of money even if it yielded a 15% gain for the average person who tows 500 mile a year. Its only benefit is it keeps the bugs off. It takes 2 men and 30 minutes to install and 2 to remove, cost a bunch, and is just a plain pain in the arse. Oh yea, its ugly as heck also.

I pull our 32' Jacyo 32BHDS (32' box, 36.5' overall & 2 slides) weighing 7984 empty per the sticker on the door (Jayco weighs each unit as shipped) and unknown how much loaded with my '99 Silverado 1500 ECSB. It is the 5.3 4x4 w/ 3.73 gears. If I pull between 50 & 55 I can get 9.85 MPGs loaded ready to camp and 5 of us in the cab. This past spring I had to take it back to the dealership for an estimate to fix some hail damage. It was just me and the camper wasn't empty, but wasn't loaded to camp either - no water, clothes, or food on board. I ran it more between 60 & 65 and on 275 around Cincinnati a little harder my fuel mileage dropped to 9.35. 1/2 MPG doesn't sound like much but when you are only talking 9, it is a big difference. I run it in 3rd gear w/ Tow/Haul on. RPMs I stay probably about 1900 as well. It will also downshift with any hill or head wind. One of these days it'll get upgraded to a Dmax, but not right now.

I've towed mostly travel trailers over the years and was used to giving the truck some throttle going downhill so that I maintained my speed. There was a very quick leaning curve on downhills when I towed my flat deck with a car on it at about 10,000 lbs. Gearing down wasn't enough and had to use lots of brake to keep my speed down to a safe and slower than frightening speed.

I never had a problem pulling our pervious 32' travel tailer with shorrbed 5.7 3:73 Chevy's...But you're right, crosswinds are the biggest enemy..Anti-sway bars help, but let's face it we're pulling a billboard.

Can't speak to gas mileage as I never really cared much...Going to be buying a new 32' footer sometime soon...Should be better now with the 6.2 6 speed GMC...We'll see.
