My Vote is for the 3pt unit, but I have limited storage space and don't want to maintain another engine... Gas with ethanol will go bad sitting in the tank of an engine in 3 or 4 weeks... Even with stabilizers you get phase separation.... so you have to run everything you use out of fuel everytime you use it.... So the last hing I want is another small engine to deal with.... Everything the guys are saying about giving up the use of the machine is true... it is a trade off.
The machine is running just above idle... I'm willing to trade speed to lower noise...

LD1 - the worst thing besides the price of $1,150 is the engine and the pump are right by your ear when operating - one loud session. These ears don't need that, even with hearing protection. Overpriced, underdesigned. Might split well, I suppose.

I am sure it does split wood just fine. It is the sticker shock I cant get over.
What does it take to have the nerve to cobble something together in the garage and demand a premium price for??
And I am not saying anything about his workmanship. I cobble pleanty of stuff together that probabally isnt designed as well as a MFG'ed unit. But it does what I want. But I am ceraintally smart enough not to as a price that is higher than a quality unit.
And the part that always gets me is some of them that they always advertise as "heavy duty" or "built better than a store bought unit". Who are they kidding. Most of them that I have seen are inferior in strength and just cluttered together without any real engineering behind it:confused2:

Tell me about it. I looked for a used splitter for a reasonable price for some time until I gave up and bought new.

This is mine before I added the catch table and piped the exhaust to a motorcycle muffler. I've since replaced the cylinder with a new one. The old one started leaking and the shop said it wasn't worth rebuilding. It's a converted 3ph splitter. You can see I used the top link fork for a throttle/choke mount.

I prefer a 3-pt for my use. Don't need an extra engine to keep up. Not worried about speed, I work by myself. Usually stacking as I split, straight off the trailer.
I built my splitter for the JD 520 that I had for years, using the tractor controls. When I sold the 520 & bought a 790, I had to add a control valve & long hoses to use the bucket cylinder connections on the 790. I run the tractor at around 1500 rpms. Bythe time I stack the splits, the cylinder is back up. Works for me! ~~ grnspot

Uuumm this may seem a little too obvious but, if you don't have a separate log splitter, what is the wife supposed to do when you are out running around on the tractor?
