I'm sorry you took it as "nation" bashing...I rarely (if ever) bash nations...but I do bash governments (including the US government) with no hesitation...and no apologies.

The National Firearms Registry...that multimillion (billion?) dollar debacle...is a pretty good indicator of the leftwing tilt of your government.

But even your post...the thread title is "Best All Around Gun", not "Is it Safe to have a Gun in my Home".
You did not respond with a type or make of gun (unless I missed something in your post or posts...if so, I proactively apologize)...you responded with complete off topic and dubious statistics. By dubious, I mean you're much more likely to getting injured or killed falling off a ladder or falling in a bath tub...but I've yet to see organizations dedicated to being anti-ladder.

The majority of gun owners are well aware of safety...there are exceptions, of course...including so-called professionals (law enforcement).

So, Creemore...what is your opinion of the best "all around gun"?

You'll find my original answer on page 27 of the thread. We kind of worked our way up to statistics after that. If make matters to you, my .410 is a Mossberg 500, and my .22 is a Henry. I inherited a few utility grade guns that mostly collect dust... a Winchester Cooey 20 gage bird gun, a Higgins 12 gage and a Lakefield bolt action .22, all 50-60 years old but in shooting condition.

And yeah, you're right. Dumb thread to get started with. But at least it got me signed up.

I have a Mossberg 500...mine is 12 gauge though. Had a Henry .22 lever action. It was a really nice rifle! I had an opportunity to get a Marlin 39A lever action .22...(there's a rifle you want to get sometime!!) so I sold the Henry.

If you're interested in firearms, try www.thehighroad.org sometime. It, for a firearms forum, is well moderated and contentious posts/threads are quickly subdued.

I have had my wife practice moving with the AR and handgun around the house. Unloaded of course.

Roy, I have been looking for a 22 mag in a lever action. Prefferably used. I have had no luck. I started hunting with a Winchester 30-30 lever action with iron sights when I was 12. I wish I still had that gun.

Being Canadian i thought to clear up our firearm laws for you Americans

Very simply firearm possesion, transport and usage in Canada is highly regulated but it is permitted. Just follow the regulations and we can enjoy our firearms just like you. Really the only thing we are not permitted to do in Canada is to conceal carry. Everything else is just regulated. Sometimes to the point of being a PITA, but much better than not being permitted at all.

Today to enjoy firearms a Canadian must take and pass a firearms course. We have two courses. One for non restricted long guns. One for restricted handguns. These are one day courses. When you pass these courses you then apply for a firearms license in the correct class. We have two types of licenses available. Possesion (POL) or Possesion & Aquisition (PAL). If someone is interested in hunting there is a hunting course to take.

We have both indoor and outdoor ranges to target shot and participate in firearm sporting events.

I have lived in Canada and enjoyed firearms all my life.

I read somewhere that Canada has higher ( or at least about the same) gun ownership like the USA. But they don't kill each other with guns as much for some reason.

What a long read, finally got thru it all.

Love my Henry Big Boy .44 mag lever. First rifle I bought. Since have bought a Win 30-30, and a Taurus stainless .38 spl. for home protection. Haven't locked the house since we moved out here, if no one is home, they will just break in and take what ever little we have. They would have to get past my Pit/Lab mix who gets feisty when he doesn't know the visitor, and no one is home. Have a large (110 lb)German shepard and a territorial female lab who is now 12 years old and still thinks she owns the whole world. Yes, they can shoot the dogs, but it'll make a lot of racket and let us know something is up.

I like the 38, it is nice and light, and being stainless, it cleans up well without much effort. Bought the old 30-30 because it is a lot of work to keep the brass on the Henry clean, and I love lever action rifles, and i'tll put a hole in 1/4" plate steel at 25 yards

Roy you got that right about the 39A Marlin.. Dad had one when I was a kid, that I used some and I would love to have one now, but geez! they are so expensive now. I cannot afford/justify getting one. I just didnt realize what a great gun it was when we had it. I think Dad gave about $40 for it back in the 60's. I worked on one for a friend a few years ago, (really just cleaned the crud out of it) and it sure brought back some memories. Maybe I will happen on one someday. I have a couple of the Mossberg 500's , good low cost reliable shotguns.

I paid $250 for mine (with a scope and the correct offset hammer for scoped guns). A guy on a local (PA) gun forum advertised it...as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it!!
The furniture is perfect, good bore and smooth action...great little rifle!

Well if you want your money back I will pay for the shipping and the dealer fee!. Bet you wouldnt sell it for that tho huh? One thing I like about them beside the excellent fit and finish microgroove rifeling and the ability to shoot shorts, longs, and LR interchangeably is how quiet they are. With that long barrel and closed breech they are noticeably quieter than my semiauto rifles. CB caps fired thru a 39A are about like a mouse poot. Let me know if you want rid of it.
