I've been watching this thread to see where it's going, Man o man, It must be tough to live in fear...:confused2:

We have been robbed twice in the place where we used to live. The first time they blew the brains out of my Doberman all over the kitchen floor. It terrified my wife. For me it isn't a living in fear thing. Just an adjustment on how to deal with this problem and a new attitude that I wish I had never acquired. I have no wish to harm anyone. I have visions of blowing away a 13 year old kid trying to enter my home. But the better of the two evils defaults to protecting home and family. Folks talk about shooting people like they are vermin and the tools to do it with. I'm not too fond of that kind of thinking either.

I've been thinking about all the talk on home defense and racking guns and all that sort of stuff. Finally come to the conclusion that a secure Bedroom with it's own ventilation system and a motion activated Halogen Fire supression system in the rest of the house would work well without all this fuss and muss about guns. Sleep well and deep. In the morning make sure there are a few air exchanges in the house and have the the local Law enforcement delegates come out to remove whomever was in the house.

No fuss, no bother, no anxiety and no lost sleep !:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Creemore, Roy seems to believe that anyone not born in the USA should have no right to post on this forum.

What? Roy's has some different opinions than me, but he's always explained his side well and listened to the other opinions on offer! And I'm a foreigner! :)

Anyway... I think the "social safety net", free-ish health care, and lack of a mortgage-system-collapse here in Canada results in a lot fewer desperate people. Still poor, just not desperate poor.

And Creemore is right about the government being generally less intrusive... it's much harder for bills to pass Parliament without support of the executive, so you get a lot fewer oddball and pet-peeve laws than in Congress.

Anyway... I'm in the process of getting my firearms acquisition licence... no big deal...

Wow Whistlepig, I guess that just confirms where I should live, right here.....

I've lived in the same house for 45 yrs without any breakins/intruders and such.....many times I've accidently left doors open when going to work or going to bed and never really thought of any bad guys to rip me off or kill my dogs.....

Not judging anyone who has to, but glad I don't have to live in fear. I just wouldn't last long in that situation.....:(

Being Canadian i thought to clear up our firearm laws for you Americans :D

Very simply firearm possesion, transport and usage in Canada is highly regulated but it is permitted. Just follow the regulations and we can enjoy our firearms just like you. Really the only thing we are not permitted to do in Canada is to conceal carry. Everything else is just regulated. Sometimes to the point of being a PITA, but much better than not being permitted at all.

Today to enjoy firearms a Canadian must take and pass a firearms course. We have two courses. One for non restricted long guns. One for restricted handguns. These are one day courses. When you pass these courses you then apply for a firearms license in the correct class. We have two types of licenses available. Possesion (POL) or Possesion & Aquisition (PAL). If someone is interested in hunting there is a hunting course to take.

We have both indoor and outdoor ranges to target shot and participate in firearm sporting events.

I have lived in Canada and enjoyed firearms all my life.

I have a Ruger Mini 14 ranch rifle. It is a great gun. I would look more towards the shotguns that come with the two style barrels. You can hunt deer and small game, but still use it for home defense and such. The key is when you get it, practice, practice, practice. Every chance you get.

Maybe a 410 shotgun or possible a .17

Practicing for home invasion would be great but doesn't the supply of invaders quickly become very scarce?:)

Just a quick note. As a Gunsmith, I just received a notice of a S&W "RECALL" of all Thompson Center Venture(?) Rifles! If you own or use a TC Rifle, ask your local Gun Shop or Gunsmith to assist you to determine if your firearm is on the "RECALL". Send it in & S&W will repair and return the FA without charge. Ed H

Almost certainly that would get one in deep trouble in the US. Since you would be secured in a bedroom there is likely to be no deadly threat to you or at least not immediately but the gas trap would hit anyone entering the house. The Halogen gas could/would be fatal and considered the same as have a shot gun setup to fire through the front door when said door was opened. Both are traps and would get one in real trouble.

What I had read years ago was that Canadian handgun control laws where finally pushed through to lower the number of suicides committed with handguns. The law did work in that the number of suicides by handguns declined but the overall number of suicides did not. I have no idea if this was really the case.

Later,
Dan
