Help Broken Shear Pin

My JD955 has a PTO break as well. I just shift the PTO lever to Mid PTO and that disengages the rear PTO so I can turn the shaft by hand.

Interesting. I'd never heard of such a thing. Can't imagine why they put it on though. Any thoughts on why they do it? Doesn't seem much benefit to me.

Which are you questioning - releasing the rear PTO when mid is engaged or the brake itself? PTO brakes came about in the 1950's when live PTO's were becoming common (prior the PTO was through the clutch). Some of the early designs would not stop the PTO completely when turned off - the shaft might continue to rotate with very little driving torque. This resulted in a lot of accidents when the operator went to work on the slowly rotating implement and got entangled, hands, fingers chopped off, etc. PTO brakes became mostly standard, at least on tractors from American companies because a person getting his hand chopped off in an implement (like a baler which has a sharp shear bar) is very likely to sue.

Yes, I was asking about the brake. Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense to keep an implement from continuing to spin. Not sure I would like having it, but I guess it would be safer.

The brake also slows and stops implements faster instead of having to wait for the implement to bleed off all it's stored inertia before it comes to a stop.

Well I replaced the shear bolt. What takes time is removing the shields, without the shields it would only take a few minutes. My tractor has a switch for independent or manual PTO. The PTO will not turn freely with either setting. So I had to disconect the shaft from the bush hog to line things up.
