Do all you guys actually turn the pto shaft to line up the bolt holes on the auger? I just turn the auger with my hand, not real difficult. ;) Intil you get your tractor figured out, best to always have it off when working around it.

Depends on the equipment. When hooking up my rototiller, I need to turn the pto. With the mower deck, I can turn the driveshaft.

What about while the PHD is on,can I just turn the auger by hand under the same conditions?

My concern really boils down to I am typically by myself when on the tractor, and I need to find a way to do all this stuff when alone...

David

Just a couple things I've learned to do by myself with the PHD. To change augers I lower it down to center but just off the ground, remove the pins and slide the auger back away from tractor to get off the shaft. Put other on auger on in reverse order the gear will stay close to that angle without quger on it, when auger is on the shaft and back to vertical lift the auger slightly and put pins back in.
I always carry a pipe wrench and short cheater bar with me when digging to use to turn auger backwards if it screws itself in the ground under a rock or tree root.

Yes I would have Manuel hook it up. He may not speak good engles but he'll get the job done:laughing:

Yea, Thats too darn funny but you know, A lot of people just ask questions without ever reading the manual that came with thier machine. Most answers are in there, READ IT :p

I know that it depends on what implements you are attaching to. The OP (David) was asking about a post hole digger and that is what I was talking about and mentioned the auger. ;)

David,
Kioti Dk's have an independant PTO. The PTO brake engages when the PTO is turned off.
That is why you can't turn the tractors PTO stub by hand to hook up an implement.
I added a overunning clutch to my tractors PTO so I can turn it one way by hand.
Makes hooking up an implements PTO shaft a whole lot easier.

I put my tiller on something so the tines are free to spin.
If not I hook it to the 3tph and lift it off the ground, turn the tractor off and then hook the pto up.

I usually turn the tractor off when hooking thing to the pto.. For two reasons.. One is safety, but the bigger reason is it usually takes me a few minutes to hook things up and I hate burning that much gas while I dink around with the pto.

Now I am not sure I even tried to hand turn it...

I need more coffee...

What I am hearing is...

If it is independant (which I believe it is) and the HST is in neutral, PTO not engaged, I should be able toi hand turn it at least in one direction.

Right?

It will only turn by hand with the engine OFF. Even though the PTO is not engaged there is still hydraulic pressure that will make it difficult if not impossible to turn by hand. ALWAYS, as a matter of good safety practices, turn the engine off before touching the PTO shaft.

On my DK45 i can turn the pto shaft by hand with the tractor off. You can also add an overrunning clutch (which i use on my rototiller and mower dur to shafts being too short) . This allows for real east freewheeling of pto.

A good overruning clutch had a hand detente to keep it attached and is easily removable. I didnt want the kind that perminantly attach.

I never read the original thread about having tractor running or not running while hooking up pto but I just can't beleive that anyone would even consider hooking it up with the tractor running. My wife has some nasty scars on her legs from stepping over a running pto shaft when she was a little girl. A neighbour borrowed the grain auger and used a 5" spike bent over to hold the plastic guard in place. She stepped over it as she had done tons of times, the nail caught her dress and ripped her legs to shreds. 100's of stiches because it ripped pieces of skin away. I do enough stupid stuff so shutting off tractor while hooking up the pto is a no brainer.
