On my CK20HST, the rear PTO can be turned by hand. When I connect the driveshaft from my snowblower attachment, I typically need to turn the rear PTO to line up the spline teeth. The PTO spins freely and easily. Of course this is with the PTO in the OFF position and with the engine running at idle. Also the HST stays in LOW or HIGH gear, no need to put it in NEUTRAL. I'm not sure if yours is the same but on mine there is two levers for the Mid and Rear PTO's, just on and off.

Now I am not sure I even tried to hand turn it...

What I am hearing is...

If it is independant (which I believe it is) and the HST is in neutral, PTO not engaged, I should be able toi hand turn it at least in one direction.

Right?

Engine off is what you are not hearing. I generally can turn the implements drive shaft to line up with the PTO's spline gear as I have never even thought of grabbing and turning the spline, while engine is off and pto is disengaged (neutral) even my old Harvester had a lever to put the PTO into neutral. Doing it with her running let alone bumping? makes certain body parts shrink, lol. If you give year and model of your tractor someone here will have the same and will be able to explain.:thumbsup:

Also, personally, I don't like hooking something up with another person... learn to do it by yourself. It's an accident waiting to happen...

The DK50 uses an electric solenoid to send hydraulic pressure to the PTO clucth, it is not a good practice to trying to hook up with engine running let alone trying to bump the tractor PTO.

Lots of good advice on here

1) Engine Off
2) 1 person in the seat and 1 person on the ground is generally less safe than turning the tractor off and setting the brake.


In any event, your PTO should have enough play with the engine off to wiggle back and forth enough to line the splines up.

On technique I use, however, is to put a bar or something between the universal joint on the yoke of whatever implement I am trying to connect. Using that technique, I have been able to turn my haybaler, haybine, and batwing several degrees in order to line up the splines. You may find that to be easier. You definitely have more leverage. The smaller stuff, I can just turn with my hands. And, most implements will rotate either way, in case you over shoot. Now, I will say, use caution and turn slowly. I can get my batwing to rotate with my bare hands. However, once I get it (20' with 3 spindles) moving, inertia will cause it to continue to rotate another 3/4 turn or so.

I usually just tip the U-joint on the PTO shaft so it is bent over at 90 degrees and use it as a crank to rotate the implement a hair. Only tractor I ever shut-off to connect the PTO was the old 5000 Ford because the brake was shot and it never stopped spinning without some load on it.

I would say do what YOU are comfortable doing, after all, it is your body parts that are going to be scrambled, not mine...

There was an EMT on here a while back and posted some graphic descriptions of some fellas that were PTO casualty's. This was in a PTO hookup with engine running or not thread. While I have hooked up the PTO with the tractor running I have stopped doing it after reading about these poor armless guys wrapped around a PTO drive shaft. And another thing with the new electric/hydraulic actuators you are trusting an electrical connection/switch to not actuate the PTO while your hand is on it.. no thank you. I have seen a lot of electrical failures in my time. Best to have the engine off, and I agree the best situation is to do it all yourself as you are in total control. I have always been able to roll the implement shaft a little to get lined up, but I would think a screwdriver or something to use for a little leverage would work if your implement was to hard to turn by hand.

What about while the PHD is on,can I just turn the auger by hand under the same conditions?

Probabally not because ot the reduction of the gearbox, plus the overcoming the angle of the u-joints in the PTO shaft. In the case of trying to spin the auger by hand, is like reverse gear reduction.

Think about it this way, jack up one rear tire on your truck, and turn the wheel. It will spin the driveshaft, which is exactally what you are trying to do if trying to turn the auger by hand. Only take the tire off and try spinning by the smaller diameter axle or brake rotor/drum.....much harder.

And I dont have a kioti, but on my 'bota 3400, my PTO will free spin in any direction as long as it is disengaged...EVEN with the tractor running.

Gear tractor, live PTO/2-stage clutch BTW.

Even with engine running, I would think you could spin the PTO as long as it isnt engaged. I do it all the time hooking up my implements.

I remember that thread...pretty graphic.

I'm also one who only hooks up or disconnects when the tractor engine is off. I know there was a lot of discussion on this...some pretty heated. Well, I do what I do...and nobody is going to change my mind.
BTW, most of the time, not only is the engine off, I also have the tractor's key in my pocket.
