Cutting fluid for drilling holes?

A machinist told me that you can use water, he said all you are wanting to do is cool the drill bit. Myself I have used WD40, but that gets expensive.

x 2.......

My machines (lathes and mill) use water-soluable oil.......95% water, 5% oil......

the oil is just used to prevent the machines from rusting when idle.....

it will work totally fine if it was just 100% water.......keeping the drill cool constantly is the key......ya just can't cool it when it looks hot to you, you need to "Flood" it with water......just trickle it on the drill bit

I've used a garden hose with drill press outside to drill out 1.25" holes.....let the mess dry up afterwards or catch it in buckets

Thank you for the info, I have burned up too many drill bits.

Hi, I'm re-mounting my FEL and am drilling lots of large holes in 1/2" plate. I have been using motor oil as cutting fluid, but it seems to me that real cutting fluid is some kind of soap?

I've used lots of cutting fluid on lathes, and metal band saws, but I just don't remember what it's really made of. I'm sure someone on here knows...

What do you guys use for cutting fluid?

Thanks,

I have used Westlube for about 30 years with great results,. Here is a link:

Good luck with your search, KC :D :D :D

Crisco shortening works amazing - even better on aluminum. Obviously can't spray it on as you go, but you can coat a bit or blade ahead of time and periodically. Also, with a large syringe, you can squirt some as you go.

You've got to try it - you'll be amazed. I learned this from a man who owned a global company which did tele-robotic welding, so it was an expert source!!

The stuff we use at work is pretty good, I just cant think of the name of it.:confused2:

It comes in an aerosol can, and when sprayed it looks really foamy. But it is extremely sticky and tacky

+1 for WestLube more of a paste than oil

Hardest drilling I did was drilling out broken exhaust studs in a 460 ford motorhome engine. Worked great and made it possible
