L3240 vs. L4400

Another thing to consider is the Grand Ls have a better three point lift, heavier front axle and hydrostatic steering. if you want to put a backhoe on the mounting kit requires the 724 loader not sure what kit on the L4400. Also you may want to get the skid steer quick attach and a third function valve. If you are going to spend alot of time on the tractor the Grand Ls have more comfort and power for their size. Sometimes I am supprised on that the L3130GST with the LA723 loader and grapple can do when I move logs around.

I have an L3240 with the LA724 loader and BH90 backhoe.I have done a lot of work with it mainly clearing and levelling my property.I bought the tractor new and now have over 650 hours on it.I find the tractor has enough power for most jobs but sometimes wish it had more, especially when climbing hills. It has loaded rears and weighs around 7500 pounds which puts it at the low end of power to weight.I don't use the TPH so can't really comment on that too much other than to say the tractor is close to six feet wide at the rear tires. You have to consider this if using a box blade or snowblower for example as they should be as wide as the tractor and it seems there might be just enough power to run them depending on the situation. My point is that I find the L3240 to be a bit low on power for it's size and weight.Others might disagree.Having said that I do like my tractor and find it quite economical to run if that is a concern. It will allow you to do a lot of work without spending a fortune on fuel.I did consider the L4400 when I bought my tractor but I liked the layout and features of the Grand L more.In hindsight I might have been happier with an L4240 but money is always a consideration as well.:2cents:

I think I would look at the 3540 over the 3240.

I agree with Al, the 3540 is equal with the L4400 on everything except raw horsepower.Fel and three points are almost the same but with the HST plus and stall guard and tilt steering along with a few other frills for me it's a no brainier, just saying.

Im reading your posts with interest as I'm revisiting the L4400 as it comes with a BH92 in Australia whereas the MX5100 does not ...so im thinking of losing 5hp to get a better Back Hoe in the deal without trying to import a Woods BH90 from USA.

My question is about the Stall Guard feature....is it that effective or does it mean the L4400 is likely to stall often when moving dirt?

I have no the problems with stalling on the L4400HST while doing FEL work.

Thanks Dex3361...

its just that the selling feature of the Grand series seems to indicate that the other models might have that as a problem...Can others advise their experiences...would be interesting..

I don't have the experience with the Grand L's HST+ but I can say for me at least it wouldn't be a huge selling factor. I've never used it, so this may be totally wrong, but all the other HST's work perfectly fine. I believe what the GL does is when it senses a load it increases RPM's so you don't have to let your foot off the peddle. What most of us do on our non HST+'s is when the tractor becomes more and more under load you let your foot ever so slightly off the peddle so you don't stall the tractor. If you just go as fast as you can into a pile of dirt, either way you will be stalling your tractor, even with the +. I wouldn't worry too much about stalling, a little practice on any tractor and you will know its limits and when it will stall and how to prevent it.

Stall guard keeps the engine from stalling as for instance you push into a dirt pile with the loader. I find it a real saver as it takes the work out of loading. Not that it is a problem stalling but it sure makes easier.

I opted for a used L5030 over a new L4240 with HST+. I have no regrets, but while I have no problems, there are times I would like to have the HST+.
