Metal Roof Question

   / Metal Roof Question #61
This is how we access difficult roofs. A steel hook ladder that you can attach sections to as needed. Called a chicken ladder, but I'm not sure why.

Those pictures terrify me!!!!! Now I'm going to have nightmares. :(

'cause I'd take one look at it and chicken out .....

---------------

I'll get a decent photo or 2 of the roof under discussion up tonight.

Excellent discussion so far, thanks to all of you! FWIW, I'm a fan of metal roofs having owned two (house and 4000sf barn) for the past 12 years or so now.

btw, I do have a tractor, and a little land. '07 Deere 4320 w/FEL, about 400hrs, I love it.

Called a chicken ladder after the cleats on the board going into a chicken coop I presume. I used them on my roof too. Great things.

Yes, I would expect them to do a final torque by hand after using the screw gun just as I expect the lug nuts on my pickup to be torqued after running the nut up to contact with an impact.

That's not asking Fast Johnnie too much but I doubt he will ever work for me anyway because I don't hire Fast Johnnies that are interested in how fast a job can be completed rather than how good a job can be done .

I'm all for torquing wheel nuts.....there's only 4 - 8 per wheel. There might 3000 screws or more on that size of roof. I'm not fast eddie.

I don't know if MIKE HOLMES' show plays in the US. This guy does "everything" correctly, he'll start a kitchen reno, by the end of the show he's replaced everything between the foundation and the roof cap. Its just not reasonable to expect. How do you collect a bill when you quoted the kitchen reno 10k and come back with 200k bill for extras. A judge would laugh in court!!! Only expect the reasonable from a reputable contractor.

It does: Holmes on Homes. Seen it many times. It's on HGTV (Home & Garden Television). He's a persnickety lad, like myself

x2 especially that 4th one to the right

 I intentionally use those pictures to show off and add a little shock value.

It's hard to capture the Vertigo effect, you guys are saying it's working ?

It's really not that bad, try to position the boom lift below the ladder, once you get comfortable it's actually very peaceful up there.

But it shows how useful a hook ladder is even on difficult roofs. We use hook ladders all the time, an aluminum fly section and steel hook for residential apps.

The new one is "Holmes Inspection". He goes to folks house and gives them a real inspection and fixes whats wrong. Similar to the old show except he "inspects" the house first and then fixes it sometimes minor sometimes down to the studs. Difference here is i think he pays everything, the old show i think he was paid somehow by owners, maybe just labor or matierials , i dunno?

He is extreme, i dont know how anyone could afford for him to build anything. I like the guy but do have a problem when every 30-60 yr old house he goes into he says "not enough insulation, its not up to minimum code". Thats the truth, when that home was built in 1964 minimum code in the attic was not R-50 and Obama's law has not passed where to sell a home you have to update an old home to code, so of course most houses older than the last code update dont have minimum insualtion to code. Just one thing. But yes i love the show and watch them and have it on my DVR!
