I hope every thing works as you want it now. A word of caution. Chains on the front only puts a lot of stress on the front differential. You may want to check with your JD dealer and see what they recommend especially if it is still under warranty.
Bill

Not under warranty but I took your advice anyway and called all 3 of the local JD dealers, Not the answer I wanted to hear, but they all said not recommended. Not that it was guaranteed to do damage but more like "Pass at your own Risk"

There's another thread on just that, "front chains only" subject, some are for and some against. I have a nice set of rears but I only need a tad bit more traction and the fronts only is just enough. plus makes steering with snow blade so much better.
I'll rethink this a little, but probably keep doing it, knowing if the front end blows up, then enough people warned it could happen.

Like this?
Yeah I'm always fooling around, surprised I haven't rolled one over yet.

This one is actually not stuck even though it is hung on it's belly. Shows the power of chains, even on a 2wd machine with ballast box also dragging, this thing crawled out of this on it's own!

Why not put the rear chains on if you have them? This would take the stress off the front axle. Chains on both axles is ok and could save a bunch of $$$$$.

JB4310, nice looking rig. I wonder if you would just break the weight of the blade off the ground when you are rolling a big roll of snow, if that would give the traction you need with out the front chains,it will put some traction on the front. I have to do that with my garden tractor and also on a pickup with blade if it gets pretty heavy, and than again maybe you already tried that.

I would also think this to be a common practice when plowing deep or heavy snow.

I only do that blade lifting if needed for pushing heavy snow straight ahead, but it doesn't seem to help with the steering. I mean sure if you lift it high enough you'll regain steering but that would require several passes over the same path, then you'd have a very packed down surface.

Too much weight hanging off the rear will kill your steering when snow plowing. That is why I have ½¾ inches stone in my ballast box, come winter when I put my snow plow blade on I take two five gallon pails of stone out of the ballast box.

Just to update my own thread,
Going on second winter with this frame mounted plow.

Last year I was still working the bugs out, plus we had a mild winter so unable to really put it to the test. This year is the acid test we got 6 feet of snow in like a month!

I've had to push this thing to the max and it has out performed my expectations. No regrets and nothing has even gotten loose. Running out of space to plow snow to in parts of my small contractors yard. I will put the loader on after maybe one more storm just to move the piles up or out but the plow will go right back on.

Some pics included, I have some video but have to figure a way to share here.

JB,
Have to ask. Have you got hung up on the plow frame,,Yet? Now that is a good time, not that I know:cool:

Thanks, it was stupidly simple, the way I did the lower mount frame, don't know why JD doesn't offer something like it. then anyone could mount a truck plow to frame.
The only frame mount plow they have for this model requires removal of loader mounts.
Using the loader stick for 4-way plow function is beautiful and natural.

The answer is yes, just once, but that was only when I pushed to far just fooling around for a photo op. The snow was soft half way up the pile and front wheels droped in. tried digging it out but ended up pulling it out easily with my truck.
The whole plow A-frame was hung up, my undercarriage frame stays on all year even with loader and does not hang down lower than axle so no problem yet with that.

Cool, I love an honest person. I don't know how many times I've got myself hung but I bet my wife could tell you exactly how many.

Glad to see the working pics. I can confirm how much fun it is to have such a frame mount system.
I've yet to find a need to put the loader/bucket back on to move snow that the front blade can't move.
That pile you climbed up on could be moved bit by bit and shoved further back into the trees with the blade straight - - easily. :)

Now, add a wing plow for the ultimate in moving snow back further. :D If you are looking for something more to do. :)

I just now got in from putting the chains on the front and then I moved all our snow piles back. It was like "what do you mean I'm done". That's 3 driveways and the barnyard area.

Some of mine are in inside corners so I may need the loader to move some of it, no problem, just have to dig the loader out from under the snow.

Believe me I was thinking about that wing of yours (I think that was you that had the video last year) when I was plowing a longer stretch of my drive. But in my case except this year I don't think I could justify the need, but I was thinking about it.

Never thought I could justify a 3pt blower, but i'm thinking about that as well.

Very nice snow plow build. I am trying to get build one myself and was wondering if you could answer a few questions on your lift mount build? 1 What is the lenght of your lift mast.2 what is the lenght of your lift bar.3 What is the lenght and dia of your lift cyl? if you could give the demensions of these three things would appreciate very much Timbo58

No problem,
I will have to measure that for you, the cylinder came from Tractor supply, I remember that.

If you don't hear back from me in a day or so bump the thread again to remind me.

You could use my numbers as a starting point, but I just got the cylinder and started laying it out on a bench to see how long the parts needed to be.
