Does this work like a safety or when the decocker is on can it still be fired? It is a little confusing because the safety on my 92 is also a decocker.

To answer your question a little further. No the sig does not have a manual safety like your (and mine) Beretta. The decocker only lever on the Sig springs back up under spring tension. The decocker on the Beretta stays set in detent, you have to manually move the Berettas safety to fire position, to be able to fire the gun.

Most will argue, and I basically agree, you don't need a safety with a gun like that. When decocked you are in DA mode and that requires a 10 pound long trigger pull, as opposed to the 4 lb pull when the hammer is cocked and the gun is in SA mode. So basically similar to a revolver, no safety on a revolver just a heavy trigger pull, usually 12 +lbs.
With the long heavy trigger pull required in DA mode, it is almost impossible to have an accidental discharge by just casual contact with the trigger.

One scenario where a manual safety could be a plus is if some inexperienced person (or a kid) grabbed your gun and tried to discharge it by just pulling the trigger, they couldn't, with the safety on.

I am undecided if a small revolver or Ruger .22 would be better for the wife. A revolver is probably easier to use, I just dont know if I could find a small one without much recoil? maybe a .38?

.22's don't have much recoil at all...and a lot of folks do use 'em for home protection.
That said, you and she (better yet, she, and one of her lady friends) should go to a range where one can rent handguns...if she's going to use a firearm for protection, she should be the one selecting the gun and the caliber.

I follow all the gun threads with a great deal of interest... I was raised around guns and have fond memories as an 11 year old, of hunting woodchucks with my first .22, a remington pump, and rabbits with a single shot .410. I only wish I still had all the guns I have owned, but unfortunately when I was younger and money was tight, I often had to sell or trade in order to own a different gun I wanted. I've always been partial to S&W revolvers... I currently own 2, a model 27 in 3.5" barrel, and a model 642 which I carry frequently. I've owned several ruger and high standard rimfire pistols, but currently only have a Browning Buckmark, and a Walther p22. The Buckmark is excellent... the Walther is fun to shoot, but has a few quirks... I plan on replacing it with the Ruger SR22 pistol as soon as I can get one... they are hard to come by right now.

Now to the real point of my post... I bought a Gen2 Glock 23 in 1995. I like the .40 cal, but was never really able to shoot well with this Glock. A couple of months ago I bought a Springfield XDM in .40 cal, 4.5" barrel, with 16 round mag. I was amazed at how well the gun felt, and how accurate it was. Two weeks later I got another XDM .40 with the 3.8" barrel. I simply love these pistols... much more so than my Glock. I know they don't have the track record of the Glocks, but I personally feel they are comparable in durability and simplicity of design. I am really surprised that no one else has mentioned the XD or XDM during this discussion?!?!

I have seriously considered a new XDM, But a lot of people would say I have too many pistols now as it is. Nah..

Nope...ain't nothing cheap for a Sig!

Bird, as Tommy Lee Jones said to Robert Downey in U.S.Marshalls: "Get yourself a Glock and lose that nickel-plated sissy pistol".

Factory Glock mags go for around 20 bucks...

Loose that Glock and get a Wilson Combat.....:D

Take a look at Ruger's LCR. My Wife has one in .38 and loves it. the recoil is not bad at all. She carries it in her purse most everyday. There is no external hammer to hang on anything. She does not like pistols but is very confident with a revolver.
