unfortunately ( fortunately? ) this isn't a tresspass issue.. county road ROW is at the front ( west ) side of my pasture, east side of my pasture buts up to a seldom used service road for a housing development.

north border is a neightbors fenceline.. south border is an open ROW between me and the next neighbor.. so you don't have to come on my property to see the horses. My pasture is setup so it wraps around the house on the north, so you can see it from north, east and west, and if on south, you can drive up tot he neighbors driveway and see down the row and into my pasture...

It is fortunate that there hasn't been any trespassing, but that would not stop me from posting the signs at the fenceline and making sure a camera was fixed on the right of way that you saw the Pathfinder travel.

What an insane pain in the behind. I really like the suggestions of the "reward for info" signs and the cameras. There's gotta be a point at which you can find out who this is.

Man, I'd be furious! Good luck.

They will eventually inform callers that they've been on site and verified the animals are well cared-for. They may ~say~ they have to respond every time, but I guarantee there's a limit to their patience, too.

Howdy,

Animal cruelty laws are in place for a reason. Someone is abusing this fact, and animal control will figure this out. You do not need a lawyer. You do not need to miss work. They can schedule a visit at your convienence if needed. Animal control or any other agancy can not willingly give out any information about complaints. Even if you did know, what are you going to do? "beat them up? threaten them... that is the reason the information is not given out. I am sure it could be the type of zoning your in. In Virginia, area which are zoned AOC have complete right of way. (go AG) In the last few years, there have been animal abuse cases up here with food and water. People fined, animals confiscated, and rescued. This is not a local law. This is not something your going to change. Your best defense is keeping up what your doing and knowing your animal control folks, and they will also not waste resources after a few complaints.

Camera's = really? come on, you have better things to do. Even if you have picture's, coercion is not something you want to be involved with.

I'm hoping this is someone with genuine (if misguided and uninformed) concern for animals. Were it me, I think I would have a bar-b-que and invite everyone who I think might be the culprit or might know the culprit, and introduce them to your horses etc.

While this may not get you revenge for your time and irritation, it might solve the problem and might net you a few new friends from the area. What's more, you and the others in the area might have a good time. If this person is genuinely interested in the quality of care for the horses, this would put an end to it by showing that your quite fond of your horses and take exceptional care of them.

The other advantage is that when neighbors see the posted violations, they will know without any doubt that they are bogus.

I am naive, but it keeps me happy.

Coercion? At least with the camera proof you can approach the caller and invite them to inspect the animals for themselves, and put a stop to the nuisance.

Coercion? Show me where that was mentioned with photos?
Plus, I NEVER take photos when waterboard my neighbors. ;-)

Boy we sure do have a bunch of paranoid members or internet Rambo's on the site. A law enforcement agency was called about POSSIBLE animal abuse. It's their job it check it out and inform the owner they are doing so. I am surprised they had to have permission to enter the site, the game warden doesn't. Seems obvious to me that the officer, after checking three times realizes they have either another nut case calling, a horse ignorant concerned citizen or someone that doesn't like Soundguy. The officer exchanged phone numbers which seems to say the officer doesn't see any issue's, yet by law has to follow up on complaints. So give them permission to call first, go through the gate and check if there is nothing to hide. End of posted signs.

The suggestions coming in a are almost funny to me. Hire attorneys, freedom of information act, privacy fences on a horse pasture, multiple cameras, rewards for information, news stories, change the laws, confrontations with the accuser, fake burials, a government conspiracy to check the property. Come on, they have to check a complaint. With the current economy there are a lot of abused animals out there. A responsible animal owner, like Soundguy, would want them to follow up on reports. The LEO has the picture now or would not have exchanged phone numbers. I'll bet the problem is over and we will not have to set up land mines or pill boxes.

A few miles from me, someone had something similar happen. They ended up putting a big sign in their pasture saying their older horse was just fine, healthy, and doing well. There was more one the sign, but I do not recall; it has been down for a while now.

These people live on acreage next to bordered by freeway on-ramp on one side, and a two lane road that leads to two large developments. Apparently passer by's thought the old horse was sick or mal-nourished. Then they saw it all shaggy in winter. Heaven forbid they saw it shedding and rolling in the pasture in the spring...

I have been by there a number of times; the horse looked like a healthy old horse to me, but I have been around horses and some livestock in the past too.

It must be different where you are...

Here, local law enforcement chooses the complaints they respond to and the ones they don't.

The chief held a press conference and provided a list of complaints/calls where the police will no longer respond.

Non-Injury Traffic, Illegal Dumping, Burglary not in progress, Animal Welfare, etc...

Cutbacks force police to curtail calls for some crimes - USATODAY.com

In other words... residents are often on their own.

Good points made, but still no one has given an explanation that Soundguy can give his boss for why he is missing another 1/2 day of work, missed wages, etc. I don't know about you, but I have limited time off. My manager is very understanding in most cases, but repeated stuff like this would test his patience.
