I decided to see how much my truck weighed and ran it across a scales. Its a 2004 Dodge Quad Cab short bed, 3/4 ton, 5.9 Cummins. It had about 3/4 tank of fuel, I figured a full tank would have added about 80 pounds. I also have a tool box in the bed, and I would estimate it is about 100 pounds with the stuff in it.

The truck weighed 7430 pounds without me on board. The truck is rated for a gross weight of 9000 lbs. You can see from this, in reality I shouldn't haul anymore in the bed than a 1/2 ton. In reality, I'm not to worried about hauling a little more than that if needed. From what I've read the only difference on my truck and a 1 ton SRW is the rear springs. The brakes and axles, frame, every thing else is the same.

The way I use my truck, this is a non-issue, but Diamond Pilot is always warning people if they haul heavy loads not to get a 3/4 ton, and if you look at my numbers, he is correct.

I actually looked up the specs for my year truck, and a 1 ton SRW would allow me an additional 900 lbs of gross vehcile weight, but an additional 4000 lbs of towing, mine is rated at 12,000 lbs towing and a SRW is rated at 16,000 lbs.

At that weight I assume its 4x4???

Thats only ~600lbs lighter than mine. But it is about the heaviest combo you can get in a dodge 3500. Its a 2005 DRW, quad-cab, long bed, 4x4, and cummins. 11,200 GVWR. The DRW really adds ALOT to the hauling capability.

empty weight is ~8000lbs. Just depends on how much junk I have in the back seats. Just last week I hauled a load of stone. Dad and brother were in the cab with me. (300lbs) Tare was ~8400lbs. Load going out was ~11,100. Right on leagal capacity. Truck with DRW's handled the ~2700lb load like it wasnt there:D

kicker was on the way to the quarry, we crossed a 4T limit bridge. I knw we werent going back that way. I told dad we were probabally over already (before we got loaded). Sure enough we were:confused2:

I have to ask though, why did you decide on the short box??? After my last SB truck, I said I would never do it again. Just cant haul much of nothing back there.

That's strange. My SB truck will haul a lot of nothing, without straining at all. I can even have nothing piled as high as the cab and nothing overflowing the sides. But with the tailgate down, nothing falls out.

Funny how much these numbers change from year to year and model to model. My 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT, Quad Cab, 4WD, 6.25 Ft Bed, 4-Speed Automatic Transmission, 5.9L CTD with 3.73 Axle Ratio specs are as follows: (From Dodge's website)
You Can Tow 13050 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) = 9000 lbs
Payload = 2187 lbs
Curb Weight = 6813 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 4140 lbs/4140 lbs
GAWR Front/Rear = 5200 lbs/6010 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) = 20000 lbs

So far, it's been more than adequate for my needs. But, then again, I don't have anything (yet) nearly as big and heavy to haul as some of you guys, nor have I actually weighed it with my usual junk to get a real world curb weight.
I'm not even sure if there's a truck scale within 100 miles of me.

Have you actually weighed it?

My post states that I have not weighed it, nor am I within 100 miles of a truck scale. I don't know how else to say it.

I'd be shocked if your truck weighed much less than mine. Mine is also a 4x4 and they sound like they would weigh almost the same.

As far as why I got a short bed. A long bed quad cab, is a lot of truck and wouldn't fit in my garage very well.

My truck serves as my DD, so the short bed is much nicer in the parking lots at work than a long bed. Also, short beds are much more plentiful in this neck of the woods than long, and as I bought used, I had to run with what the local market had. No regrets.
