I think you have to look at the productivity of the vehicle. If you are moving a cu yard of material in your truck as opposed to moving 1 person to point A in a car, how do you calculate in the productivity aspect. I think that is a factor that needs consideration. Just a thought.

With regards to coal (I know little about it nor have I ever actually seen a piece)It would be better to link to a website so the responder can judge if there is bias at the website as well as even argue the points or data presented. If I linked folks here to a article on Climate Change at the Rush Limbaugh website, there would without doubt be skepticism.

If you want a good idea on presenting an argument for a cause may I suggest you look at National Geographic's Masters of Photography. The videos are free at Apple iTunes. Go to Ocean Soul #10 presented by Brian Skerry. Excellent work and his not so over the top teaching is something we can all learn from. He makes an excellent argument about Tuna fishing near the end of the video as well as talks about New Zealands remarkable coastal recovery. Even if your not into this stuff, he at least gets you to think about it.

My Subie can pull 2700 lbs. I use a trailer when I need to move large or haevy items. This way I'm not paying the price of driving a PU with no payload when I don't need to. Actually I do have an old PU, I think I put 200 miles on it last year, the trailer works fine.

There is a lot of info out on coal and a lot of documentaries. It's a given that the acid rain from coal has created real problems. The coal industry could use scrubbers but it's cheaper to pay fines.
It's not a mystery what a coal plant puts into the atmosphere, you're burning coal, it's not the cleanest stuff on the planet. Arsenic, mercury sulfur, assorted heavy metals, etc. Acid rain, high mercury in fish, etc. Now think about 52% of the US's electric coming from coal.... big problems.

I've seen the NG stuff, pretty nice.

I have a friend who sells maintenance contracts, spare and retrofit parts to wind power generation industry. He says that wind generation in general works but that it is still immature industry plagued by design issues. The new machines being build recently are better. The large machines over about 2 MW of rated power can produce electricity at about the same cost and ROI as fossil fuel burning plants.

Here is another little wake up call for the Warmies.

J. Loveit a big time scientist involved in the warming thing. He now says its all a hokes and is not happening.

Look this up in several scientific journals.

Wind turbines do increase the air temp where they are located. More turbines higher temp.

In England it takes more energy to keep the turbines warm & operating than they produce.

Wind Turbines kill around 400 birds a year including many Bald Eagles. They are except from all fines or liabilities. No So for Oil Company's.
 Darn ... Meant to include this in previous post but forgot. You didnt read the article ... Or didnt understand it. Major logic disconnects there between "Global headline" statement and text. Ridiculously manipulative of the manipulable. :confused3:

Hmm, I don't understand. They went through the trouble of running power lines to have power just for maintenance? I would think a small portable generator would have been far easier and cheaper. Maybe I am missing something.

Quantity and quality of power needed. I asked because I thought it was a bit much, too. The maintenance guy said they and their contractors are used to easily tapping power and stringing conductors for tower maintenance but they don't transport poles. The poles are pulled and stored on-site for future use. Poles are cheap. They only would buy a handful of poles, at most, because distribution lines for local farmers are nearby.

The generated power, of course, is run underground and is usually in farm fields. Each tower has its own road which is very well built, not just some road plowed through a farmer's field. The pads the towers sit on are large with plenty of room for me to maneuver a tractor-trailer.

About 25% lakes in Sweden has critical acidity levels. Some lakes have no single living creature present due to acidity caused by acid rain.
JSTOR: Ambio, Vol. 9, No. 1 (1980), pp. 34-36
Switzerland has damaged 14% of the forests by acid rain.
Acid Rain Effects - Forests

US also have forest damage.
Damage From Acid Rain Pollution Is Far Worse Than Previously Believed

There are hundreds of square kilometers of dead forest in Czech republic. All killed by acid rain.

Natural Gas is only marginally better than coal in acid rain emissions.

Larry,

They burned all the physics books, they didn't fit their paradigm! It created a lot of heat in the vicinity of the flame though!

Actually I think its more that its out of vogue to know stuf. People who know stuf and think critically are such snobs. Sanitorium said this, I think.

Ladia,
I'm not against large scale wind but I think renewables are ideally suited for individual homes and small industry.

That's why it works so well for us. I'm able to contour what I have to work with to my advantage.

For example, I've been monitoring wind at different places on my front pasture for about 3 years now so I know pretty much what I can get. I started relatively slowly with PV. The first year I put in about 1400 watts of PV and one inverter just to see what kind of energy I'd get. Now I know it works really well for us so I'm increasing the PV (once you have the basic system in you don't have to buy more inverters, MPPTs, etc. so the modules are a cheap add on, abuot $1.20 a watt before the 30% gov. return)

As far as large scale wind, there are a lot of 'people' trying, for obvious reasons, to knock it down.

The thing that cracks me up is that we have people here who know nothing about renewables telling someone who lives with them everyday that they don't work.

What??
That's like a guy playing poker with you who's showing you his hand while he's shouting he has a better hand than you even though he has no idea what you're holding!

Critical thinking.. let's abolish it before it gets out of hand! Santorum, now there's a head full of stuf.....!

I'm the guy who thinks we should let everyone have two kids for their replacement. After two you start paying MORE tax. Why are we subsidizing people to procreate? People don't want to subsidize PV? I don't want to give tax breaks for procreation. OK have couple of kids, after that pay for your fun.

Go forth and multiply was a great idea when there were seven people on the planet, 6.9 billion... maybe we should rethink our strategy!

Now I'm really going to be popular here!

Why not just Google it and find out what is really said rather then type something that tells us considerably more about you and your beliefs. I know this is sarcasm but its much funnier when its true.
