Buying Advice Kubota bx25 vs mahindra max 25

   / Kubota bx25 vs mahindra max 25 #221
I have had several guys come in to my dealership to see the Max for themselves based on this thread. So, if someone wants to continue the debate, it sure does not hurt Mahindra, but it does get old.

A tractor is not a spreadsheet, nor does the nomenclature of SCUT or CUT really matter. They fit people and people's needs differently. People should first of all decide to buy good quality, that is a given, and there are a number of brands that are top quality. Then consider the tasks at hand and how fast they want to accomplish them to help them get the right size. Even a small tractor will do a big job (as long as the job can be broken down into small pieces) given some patience. That sets the basic parameters. From there, find a tractor you like from a good dealer and toss the stack of brochures once you do.

For me, I like the Max 25 or Max 28XL because I want a small tractor that can handle a large mower or tiller. I have great loamy soil and no rocks, and when I till up the garden, I don't mind using a decent size tiller. Now if I did mostly loader and backhoe work, and kept my mower and tiller to a reasonable size, I'd pick the Max 22. Other than HP, you get the same tractor as the Max 25 for less money. If I had heavy loader work for a small tractor, I'd pick the Max 28XL, it lifts as much as some of the competitors 35 HP tractors. But I would first define my needs. I would not just try to buy a tractor that tops out in every column, you end up buying more tractor than needed.

Sounds like excellent advice to me!

Are you Mahindra dealers also competing against the Kioti CK20S with the new Max lineup or is that a different market?

The CK20S would probably be more comparable to the Max 28 in size and capacities, just short on HP, but probably heavier. We do not have much Kioti competition in our particular area so I have not studied up on it. Typical of Korean vs Japanese small tractor manufacturers, the Korean unit will be heavier per HP. Generally speaking the Kioti buyers seem like a real satisfied group, so I suspect the CK20S is a nice machine.

But to more directly answer your question, I think the Max 22/25 are more aimed at the BX Kubota, the GC Massey, and the small Deere.

Thats the whole problem.:confused2: They are aming it at the BX, GC, and 10-series when it is clearly almost identical to the 20-series and B's:laughing:

But I know you dont mind me continuing to "beat this dead horse" because after all, you said

So, if someone wants to continue the debate, it sure does not hurt Mahindra

Are there any other tractors in the size and price range as the 28XL that will lift 1400 lbs? This is pretty attractive in this size machine. Is there another? I'd like to know about them if there are. The Kioti CK20 is close, but falls short on both HP and lift. The TYM T273 is close in size and HP, but lifts less. Anything else?

LD1,

You are a pretty friendly guy with which to debate anyway, and you aren't trying to make this into an international conspiracy, so we can chat some more on this. I don't see a problem, because this is more of an issue with TBN guys than actual shoppers. Of the last 5 Max 25's I sold in the last couple of days, only one guy knew a CUT from a SCUT from a RUT in the road. And he is TBN guy, so he enjoys the debates! Not to say the others do not know tractors, they just don't care about this trivia. They have a couple of acres and need a good but compact tractor. If they read this thread, they would think we have too much time on our hands.

But I'll bite, just to humor you a little. The CK20S is 2125 lbs bare. I'm not one to put a tractor into a particular box, but the Max is already a little heavier then the BX and GC, but the CK20S is about 25% heavier than the Max 22, for which it is most similar in HP (22 vs 22) and Cu. In., where the Max 22 has 68 vs 61 for the CK20s.

I'll let Kioti define the CK20S. It has it's place. It's a little heavy for it's HP, yet it would have good traction and stability I think. If Kioti was silly enough to define this as a full size farm tractor to work 250 acres, then the market will correct them.

Mahindra is going after the 1-10 acre land owner with the Max and Max XLs, and the tractors seem about perfect for that. If you need capabilites similar but a little better than most BX models, go with the Max 22. If you want to oversize the mower and tiller a little, go with the Max 25. If you need to lift a rediculous amount in the loader and want larger tires and more ground clearance, go with the Max 28XL.

So a little off topic. Dave, What are the markets of 3016 and 3616 aimed at?

So a little off topic. Dave, What are the markets of 3016 and 3616 aimed at?

The 3616HST is marketed directly at you Steve!

More seriously, the 3016/3616 are what I might call a medium frame compact. It's my term, and I like to use it for 25-40 HP tractors that are under 3500# with a loader and are roughly 5' wide. Then there is what I call a heavy frame compact which would be more like the 35 series and 10 series and would be 35-50HP and roughly 6' wide and 4000-5500 lbs with a loader.

If you are going to push the limits of a certain size tractor, then buy the most powerful unit in it's series. LIke the Max22 and Max25 are basically sisters, but the 25 has a much larger engine. That doesn't matter for loading and backhoe work, but is handy for mowing tall stuff or lots of tilling. Same for the 3016/3616, they are basically twins, but you get 8 extra HP with the 36, which is great for heavy PTO work. And remember, the HST burns a little HP as they aren't quite as efficient as a gear/shuttle.

You can see here that the Max is really in the same basic size category as the GC. Just a tiny bit larger. Do note the higher seat but lower ROPS on the GC. Not sure how a 6' tall guy would handle a roll over on a GC. If you draw a line from the top of the ROPS to the front of the hood, the guy's head would be taller than that line. Max has a folding ROPS in case you have a low shed.

Slightly taller tire on the Max. Metal hood vs non-metal. Steering cylinder tucked behind the front axle for the Max. Grill gaurd a little bigger. All minor differences, but I'd say still the same class.

When you put both up on a lift and take pictures of their undersides, that is where the difference really shows and an argument could be made that they are in an entirely different class.

If people are not bored with this subject, I can put these on a lift and snap pictures of the undersides.

Can't imagine anyone would object to some pictures of the Max! Lift it!
