I have been thinking about building something that would cut the grass in my barbed wire fence rows. My original basic idea was to build something about like a push mower deck mounted to an arm connected to my 3 point hitch. Would have a gearbox and belt and be spring loaded so as I deck made contact with a fence post it would pivot backwards and swing out around the post. When clear of the post the spring would return the cutter deck to the original position. Probably a 18" or so cutting swath. Then I started thinking about the possibility of using a hydraulic motor instead of a belt and gearbox. Saw where someone has built something similar to this idea using a sickle mower, but I would like to be able to drive a couple miles per hour and not worry about backing up or moving the sickle in and out.

Anyone built anything like this or know of anything similar to get some ideas from?

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks. I searched youtube and found some equipment that is similar to what I was envisioning. Like this one or this one. Would make a good winter project...but RoundUp would probably be cheaper unless I can do some good scrounging.

Thanks,
Jeff

What your discribing is something like a DR Mower using either nylon string, or something a bit more durable. Instead of a gas engine it would run off a gearbox and mounted on a three point hitch off to one side the same way some tillers are made.. There may be something already out there like that.
