Did "Sandy" storm match expectations?

Now that's a stimulus package...and hard to outsource the cleanup although many of the items replaced will be foreign made.

New numbers just came in. They are talking about 20 billion to cleanup and rebuild. This is insane.

Do I wish the storm lived up to all of the dire predictions? He|| no! I was without power for six hours, and I consider myself EXTREMELY lucky. My thoughts and prayers go out to those not quite so fortunate...

Plenty of generators for sale on Craigslist if anybody is looking. Wish I could put an NG powered one here, but seeing as I live in a second floor apartment it's not exactly practical.

You know Houston, you can say what you want, but this storm had the most densely populated region of our country in its bullseye. Nowhere along the Gulf Coast is there anywhere near the population density of the northeast. Besides, there's never been a hurricane that flooded the Houston, Texas subway system.;) We and those who live in the northeast can thank God that this wasn't a more forceful hurricane. The cost of this storm, extended power outages, and the lives lost all say that it was a devastating natural disaster. Comparing it to a Gulf coast hurricane is just counterproductive in my opinion. I wish the best for all those stranded and in harms way in this storm. I don't need to make comparisons to know that there are frightened and helpless people due to this storm. They have my complete sympathy and hope for the best.

Well said.

Hurricane Sandy transforms into a sub-tropical storm - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

I deal in the real world, a few tree limbs and power outage are not new. Because it happens in the NE doesn't make it bad. It was not the storm of the century as touted by media, it was a weak sub tropical storm.

HS

Have you been watching the news? How do you feel now? Did you see the devastation, homes gone, lives lost. In your words, "just a few tree limbs", still stand by that?

What made it the "storm of the century"?
Record low pressure and size.
What caused so much damage?
The people who put themselves in harms way.

The seawalls in Manhattan were known to be LOW. With Hurricane Irene the seawall in lower Manhattan(?) was 1 foot from being overtopped. Now add in a stronger storm and high tide - recipe for water over the levee. Throw in lot's of holes in the ground, subways, underground parking, construction and you've got lot's of damage.

How did New Orleans prevent subway flooding?
/edit - subway line, I realize there are many Subway Sandwich shops, and probably at leat one bar named Subway :)

New Amsterdam, as it was called, needs better sea walls, like they build in Amsterdam.

The destruction along "Jersey Shore" was to be expected, sooner or later. If you build on a dynamic beach (or flood zone) you have to expect to rebuild with TAXPAYER DOLLARS or INSURANCE DOLLARS every once and awhile.
Christie said that he plans on speaking to Obama about getting Army Corps of Engineers into the state to begin rebuilding as soon as possible, especially the Jersey Shore.
Yup, TAXPAYER DOLLARS for Jersey Shore.

I saw many minutes of footage of "flooding" in Northern New Jersey, just like after Hurricane Irene a year ago. LEARN.

All the power outages caused by trees - Whatever happened to Right Of Way clearing? Trees and power lines don't mix.
Locally (DC) they interviewed some residents of an upscale subdivision which loses power every year due to trees falling on power lines. LEARN - make firewood, keep power.

If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound?
Who cares?
If a tree falls at my neighbors does it make a sound?

Well I didn't hear the tree but I heard the chainsaw. And I'm sure the car went crunch.

I don't feel much sympathy for parts of Jersey Shore that had just been rebuilt after Irene, or people like me. ( I've a beautiful LARGE maple (about 4' DBH) that if it comes down it could wipe out much of my house. But I keep it trimmed and it's a risk I take.)

I do have sympathy for all the people without power due to poor power line maintenance, all the people without transportation because the government didn't build defenses against flooding.

We just have to prepare for the "storm of the century" next year.

So you'er blaming the people that put themselves in harms way, for causing all the damage? Interesting take on things.

Seems we have a Tuesday morning quarterback here, telling us what we should have done.

You do realize that this storm was beyond anyones expectations. What happens if there is a storm twice its size next year, should we be prepared for that? There is only so much preparation you can make for the things, that we have no control over, such as the size of a storm.
