Even the Sheriff said he was disappointed by the termination & considers McLean a hero. The sherrif also states that AZ has sent a message to robbers. We're open for business. Come take our $$$$$

The article stated this happened in York County Virginia. I'm sure residents of Arizona don't take crime lightly as well. Any criminal that's not on crack or some kind of dope, has a pistol aimed between his eyes is ready to book out. I'm sure Mr. McLean wasn't worried about store property or cash receipts of the days take. His focus was defending the life of a friend. His posture probably with his personal weapon and stern words intimidated the robber. "Well do you feel lucky punk" -clint eastwood

For dicussion:
Robber shoots the manager dead, and makes away with the $2000 loot. I'm sure the manager's life is worth more than $2000 to his friends and familly.

When I stated " comply with robbers", do just that, the odds are stacked in his favour. I'd rather give this robber $2000 and I make home to my familly. That doesn't mean look the other way. If you can do something by all means.

Go back to my original post. I stated comply with demands, its just money. When he threatens a life, he'd better be ready to pay with his own life. All bets are off at that point.

Idiotic decision! Guys a hero in my book good for him I would be proud to have him as my friend any day. Fact I probably would have quit the job over it had my buddy been fired. I hate company's that dont have "grey" areas on policy only black and white it is ridiculous.

I suspect that AZ was intended to be an abbreviation for AutoZone, not for the state of Arizona.

so if I were walking by and witnessed this and happened to have a .44 magnum under my coat, you would have rather had me walk on by?

Seeing how there were 20-30 other people in the parking lot, the shotgun was on me from a man sitting inside a car and a bigger man in my face, and you wouldn't have been able to see what was in the car pointed at me anyway, yes, I would have rathered you just walk on by. I talked my way out of it and went home alive.

You stand a better chance of going home alive if you just hand over the cash.

For discussion:

The above didn't happen. Why? Because the robber saw a gun aimed at his head and threatened with eminent death. No ands, buts, or maybe. Mr.McLean would have shot the guy dead if he made a threatening move towards either of them. What do you think the robber was thinking if he heard "I will shoot you dead where you stand if you move a fraction". Mr McVean was former military versed in many weapons and was prepared to carry out a threat to the robber. The robber probably soiled his pants when he fled. Mr. McVean could have justifiably shot him dead, but he didn't. You seem to feel McLean's actions was to protect personal property and money. Mr.McLean had one thing on his mind that was to protect a friend. Your milage may vary.

I agreee that his sole intention was to protect his friend and I applaud him for that. Yes, he was brave. Yes, his intentions were heroic. Yes, yes, yes. And in my opinion he should not have lost his job.

On the other hand, statistically, he raised the chances of his friend getting injured or killed by returning with a gun and he broke company policy that he agreed to when he was hired, so he should lose his job.

Its a 50-50 no-win situation. Except for the fact that everyone went home alive, which I would call a winner in this case.

maybe this robber had grown up with parents that would let him do whatever he wanted because it was EASIER than having to be confrontational. He was used to getting away with anything because there were never any consequences for his actions... just sayin

I know a lot of parents like this and am curious to see how their children grow up.

maybe threatening the robber with a "time out" would have been a better way to deal with this.
