I always did pretty well with "Corn Huskers Oil" and "Bag Balm." Lots of time when I was using Bag Balm on my hands, I was also having to use it on the cows...it was mainly for dry chapped udders.

When I was a kid, I used to keep finger nail polish in my toolbox. I'd never heard of Loctite, but I came up with an idea that if I hit the threads with fingernail polish, the bolt would stay in. Some of my tool boxes still have fingernail polish in them, and I still get lots of cracks about it.:)

Look up paraffin hand treatment. You can buy one for home use, what I did, it is the only thing that helped my hands. I tried corn huskers, sleeping with cotton gloves, nutragena(sp).

I been using the Mary Kay stuff my wife is using now lately and its working great. It is some real thick pink colored stuff in a pink tube its not very manly and its pretty greasy but I admit it is helping when I had no faith in anything at this point.

edit: the tube of MK stuff is: extra emollient night creme. If your wife has some try it you will be amazed I sure am!

I read through the thread with interest because I have the next level of problem above dry hands. I too do lots of hobby/work that requires frequent washing of my hands, lots of times with mechanic soap. Since mechanic soap (often called hand cleaner) is made to remove grease it can really remove the natural sealing oils that are supposed to be in your skin. But on top of the winter dry skin problem, I have psoriasis in multiple places on my skin including 7 consistent patches on my hands. I've been to my regular MD and also to dermatologists countless times. Done everything from shots to all the latest prescription creams. I refuse to use the internal prescription med for it because the side effects are worse than the problem I'm trying to get rid of. Years of using the over the counter lotions would just decrease the severity of the cracking and flaking. Then a pharmacist (who's daughter has psoriasis) told me about a former by prescription only cream that has been released for over the counter sale that really helped his daughter. It has been brought up here a couple of times already but I wanted to give it another plug: AmLactin. Most over the counter creams are simply trying to seal in any moisture that is already in your skin, which does help a little. AmLactin contains ammonium hydroxide neutralized lactic acid which is what your skin has naturally and which is one of the things you loose when washing your hands. It is not just trying to seal in the moisture that your skin has (what other lotions are doing) but it is putting back what your skin needs to stay healthy. This stuff really helped me.

That certainly make sense, even though I'd never heard of that before. The only way I ever used nail polish was to put just a spot of clear nail polish on each little bump when I got into the chiggers; best chigger killer I know of.

Not sure about hands BUT for lips my Grandfather always gave us the same advice every year without fail. And by gosh it sure lessened the amount of chapped lips we used to get.

He always said 3x per day we were to go out to the barn and kiss the arse of one of the horses!

We used to ask was it the horse sh@t that prevented us from getting chapped lips... he never did answer us.

When he was about to die he told finally gave us the answer and the answer was NO. Kissing the arse of a horse was a solution because it sure stopped us from licking our lips as much in the sub zero weather which in turned lessoned the chapped lips.
:dance1:

Cheers folks

Yeah I hear Ya , believe it or not if I remember correctly about 35 years ago we used to put fingernail polish on chips and some cracks on automotive windshields to keep-em from spreading.

Have borrowed a bottle of clear many times although once only red was available, still worked :)
