Iseki TX1500 - no drive to rear wheels

What I can't quick work out is why I get good drive through the right with the LEFT brake down, but also that I can apply both brakes without stalling the engine. That seems contradictory to me, other wise I would have said the problem must be the splines on the left pinion.

Just correcting a typo there, hopefully didn't throw anyone off too much.

Ah, Very good point about trying to turn one wheel then the other with engine off.
saracenas has some good insight.
Just curious, which rear tire to you consider to be the right and the left.
Not trying to be a wise guy but when you're sitting on the seat looking
forward is that how you see right or left or are you standing in
front of tractor looking toward the back is that your left and right?
Now like saracenas suggested with tractor engine off
put transmission in 1st gear ( most resistance ) and clutch engaged
( peddle out ) don't use the brake but have someone hold
one wheel while you try to turn the other. What happens ?
If you can turn one wheel while in gear and someone holding the
other is not good. If you turn one wheel while trans is in gear
and no one is holding the other and no brakes are applied
the other wheel has to turn the other way, if not then
as saracenas has said not normal.

Right and Left from drivers seat position as saracenas says.

With the trans in neutral, each wheel turns independently, ie no opposite turn, both able to freewheel in either direction.

With 1st selected left wheel will free wheel in either direction, not affecting the right. Right wheel will free wheel backwards but engage the input shaft rotating forwards and lock - again opposite wheel is not affected.

Thanks for all your help guys, especially the schematics, absolutely invaluable. Certainly makes it easier to have you guys to bounce ideas off.

I think its clear that I have an internal gearing problem and I'm going to have to take the back end apart to find out what's broken. I wonder how much steel filings are going to come out with the gear oil!?

Anyone want to guess which component has failed? I think its either the LH pinion or output wheel (No 17 on the schematic) - but I'm nowhere near 100% on that.

It will probably be a few days before I start looking in the case - so it may go quiet here for a while - but I'll post pictures and updates once I start.

What happens with the diff lock on and the right brake on?

I'm guessing the same failure - #17 according to the noises you have heard.
Just regret you could't finish your garden tillage in time. Each day is important to do this job right now.

Stalls the engine, ie works as it should. The tractor will now drive with the diff lock on using the right wheel only - but obviously I'm not doing this to avoid further damage.

Actually I got almost enough done. Planting hybrid willow as an energy crop, also hazel and sweet chestnut for fencing (in about 10 years!) and for the nuts in the meantime.

ahh Now that you fixed the typo from the other post from right pedal to left pedal
and with the diff lock on and right brake on engine stalls then the obvious
part would be part #17 but not all things are the obvious. Hope
you only have that broken part and no other damage. Be sure to
flush out any bearing you can inside the diff case just to be sure
no fragments are hiding in bearings.

The next problem will be where to find a replacement, but as you say, could be some surprises in there!

Do not despond. Check what's going on inside first. Maybe there will be just two parts to be replaced. What about the transaxle in that eBay link you have mentioned?
There in UK should be some service/parts infrastructure for Japanese tractors. In case if not sufficient I'll think how can I help you.
Good advice carefully to flush bearings, but I'd replace them into new ones even if they look good after such tech. incident.
