The outer section of the PTO shaft should slide off with minimal effort. Think you are zeroing in on the real problem.

I agree. I'm going to tackle it again and get it off after work this afternoon.

In addition, there's another, much longer shaft that comes after the PTO shaft in question that goes from a vertical pivoting arm back to the splitter. (I've attached a similar picture from the internet). While this is attached to the vertical arm, how easily should it slide in and out? The reason I ask is my fear is that if whatever damaged the short shaft, what if the much longer shaft is damaged as well. But then again, maybe it doesn't slide easily because it's attached to the vertical arm... 3803.jpg

Again - given the amount of vibration you described - a bent PTO shaft would be blatantly obvious. Your problem is most likely below transmission level (the two boxes that spin the blade shafts). If the tranny mounting bolts are solid, the problem has to be underneath. I still say let the dealer handle it. If its related to an improperly set up slip clutch, its warranty. Otherwise use the insurance

Agree, this is where we all started but the op says underneath all checks out. The two piece PTO shaft should not be tight as he says when trying to slide in/out. May be time for JD service to have a look. I would just add that if the PTO shaft is bent that is on the dealer as well as the clutch if not adjusted properly.

Well call me stubborn. Despite the advice here, after work I went out and spent about 45 min trying to get the pto shaft off. It's pretty well attached to the spindle on the cutter. I even tried pulling it all off/apart with a chain and my truck. All this did was make the longer secondary shaft slide apart.

Defeated, I went to the dealer to pick their brains. I sat down with the salesman and service manager and they think its a bent/twisted pto shaft caused by an improperly adjusted slip clutch. They're going to pick it up Monday and fix it for me under warranty. Seeing is believing of course but I left feeling like they were going to do what it takes to fix it.

The service manager also showed me a service bulletin pertaining to my serial number tractor describing exactly the same problem I was having with the pto not staying on and cutting out. So that should be remedied too.

While they have it they're going to widen the tires. I ordered a RH door kit and rear fender extensions. I felt good after leaving the dealer. The service manager gave me a good impression.

Great news --- all the way around. Let us know what the service folks find. Good luck.

Glad to hear it. On the shaft not extending, are you sure that the short shaft is supposed to extend? We have a similar system on our baler and the long shaft extends/retracts, the cover on the short shaft extends/retracts (to allow you to remove it) but the short shaft itself does not extend...

I would double check. Looking at the exploded parts diagram on John Deere - Parts Catalog, it appears that the driveshaft is part number is either W45843 (item 18 in section 15 or 16) or AW32510 (equal angle shaft version, item 13 in section 17 or 18) both of which are one piece shafts with 2 piece shields over them.
