The outer section of the PTO shaft should slide off with minimal effort. Think you are zeroing in on the real problem.
I agree. I'm going to tackle it again and get it off after work this afternoon.
In addition, there's another, much longer shaft that comes after the PTO shaft in question that goes from a vertical pivoting arm back to the splitter. (I've attached a similar picture from the internet). While this is attached to the vertical arm, how easily should it slide in and out? The reason I ask is my fear is that if whatever damaged the short shaft, what if the much longer shaft is damaged as well. But then again, maybe it doesn't slide easily because it's attached to the vertical arm...
