I certainly dont think its latex based. I think this is an emulsion paint that just uses water as a carrier.

Like I said, the water-cleanup is only good within minutes of getting it on something. Then it gets real sticky like road tar, and you need mineral spirits to cut it.

Either way, Its got to be better than not painting it, cause that would have been my other option. I'm not out much, just a few hours of spraying with the wagner painter and $40 of paint. The only areas That I am expecting to wear off (and I dont know any paint that would hold up) is the ramps and the rub-rails in the area that I chain stuff down.

Soundguy, what was your thoughs on my questions to the lumber?? You mentioned coating the underside before I put it on. The boards are going to be green. Just sawn saturday. Do I need to let them dry a bit before coating them with this stuff. If so, that kinda rules out doing the under side cause the boards are going on this weekend. I am getting the boards this morning, but the screws wont be delivered till tomorrow:mur:

if the boards are going on.. paint them.

in a perfect world. you'd have time for dry lumber.

thais ain't a perfect world.

if your paint was an emulsion or straight oil.. i think you will be fine.

there ARE some latex based fence paints. but I've 'seen' none of them claim to be an asphalt based paint.

I put green lumber on a trailer 12 years ago and squeezed the boards together as tight as I could. Put boards down with cup sides (hump) up and screwed them down. After they dried, the gaps opened to a nice amount and it looks like I planned it that way. I coat with boiled linseed oil every couple years and it still looks great. It rarely gets wet, though and I store it under cover. Not sure if right but it worked for me.

Funny... I just did one of my trailers yesterday. Dragged it outta the field, weld up a few repairs, and paint. Bad thing is, this was Rustoleum 'High Gloss' enamel... Guess I shouldn't have painted while it was raining and 99% humidity :)
