I do a lot of mowing both with the finish mower and the brushhog. I keep the engine at 2600 rpm, and only use the clutch to engage the PTO. I mow with the transfer case in 2, and the only "jaring" is going into reverse, not bad at all bumping between the PS gears. The PS on mine take only about a second or two to engage, I love the way the tranny works.

The ignition is hit/miss, sometimes it does nothing when you turn key to crank other times it cranks right up.got brand new battery in it. There is no safety switch on clutch, guess I need a new ignition switch.

I was using it yesterday and to clarify my delay, it is only when I first let off the clutch, power shifts once moving are instant. Also I get the delay going to reverse, so starting out and backing out from a pile etc there is delay.

Check voltage on the small wire at the solenoid when you turn to crank and get nothing. Could be you are getting voltage there and the solenoid is bad. Just a possibility.

i can start it by touching post on solenoid and the starter with a cable, would that indicate bad solenoid?

Edit: I have to have key turned to on position for above to work.

No anything is like that, lawmower, car, truck, tractor boat. They function that way all your doing is taking the switch out of the equation by doing that, the switch makes that connection in the solonoid when turned.

What your doing is a way to diagnose various things from a bad switch to starter to solonoid if you know what your doing, or just a way to start a vehicle from under the hood.

Not sure what posts you are touching. If you jump across the two large posts on the solenoid you are taking it out of the picture. If you apply 12.6dcv to the small terminal on the solenoid and it turns over there is nothing wrong with the starter or solenoid. That is if it does it every time.

I am going to say normal w/o having 2 side by side would be hard pressed to say otherwise.

That is correct, I am jumping from small wire on solenoid to starter, so with the key on, 12.6v is getting to the solenoid. So it has to be the ignition..

Smoody, I am not very good with words and also sometimes have a hard time understanding what people are really saying. Just saying I think I am confused. :confused3: However, I want to understand. If you are getting 12.6dcv at the "small" terminal with the key in the crank position then the keyed ignition should be ok. The problem would likely be in the solenoid. There should not be any voltage at that small terminal unless the key is in the crank position. Don't try and borrow money on anything I say.

Now I'm confused...with key in on position. Dashlights light up..I can jump from small wire(ignition) wire on top of solenoid to starter and it cranks. Now maybe I don't understand how a switch works, if in the on position. 12.6v at the selonoid would fire the solenoid, what actually happens once you turn to key to Start? I though the power was transferred to the solenoid at that moment.
