Neighbor attacked by Pit Bulls

I am unfamiliar with that collar what is it used for? One dog was a year old and the other two according to the owner. I am a dog lover and have a dog, Boston Terrier, so I am not inclined to blame a breed one way or another. Still trying to sort this thing out it was over and done, as far as the shooting went, in a matter of seconds and at a distance of less than ten feet. Adrenalin is one powerful thing still feeling the aftereffects.

The German pinch collar is a training/handling collar. It is not to be worn EXCEPT when working with the dog. Having it on a dog, with no proper human supervision, says that you have no idea what its purpose is, as well as you do not care about the dog. It is a great "tool", but can be unsafe for the dog to wear, continually. One can "assume" that this owner thought the collar looked "neat or mean", so he put it on the dog and left it there. This collar isn't even designed for the dog's tags to be on it.

I am sure the adrenaline is still flowing. Scary thing to be faced with, and I am glad you were there and armed, for your neighbor's sake.

This is a terrible turn of events for all involved. Your neighbor is a very lucky man to have had you close by.

I believe strongly in our second amendment rights, this is the perfect example of why. Its not always going to be a bad guy who puts your life in danger.

I have noticed some members hinting that you may be "traumatized" because you were attacked too. I also noticed you have not entertained them......KUDOS to you. Your neighbor however has physical damage to his body and recovery time along with being traumatized, he should be compensated accordingly.

You did the right thing for the right reason.......it doesn't get any better than that.

Because, you NEVER know how the irresponsible dog owner may react. The OP needs to cover all HIS bases.

Read my post a little more carefully, towards the end.

Very true statement! He may try to claim animal was provoked, or some other stupid thing, to cover his behind. And we KNOW the dog owner is irresponsible!

My wife is afraid to take our Chihuahua out for a walk in our neighborhood because of the possibility of someone else's dog being loose. I do take the little dog out, but when I do, I'm carrying my Bubba Stik and have a .38 in my pocket.

And our seven and a half year old Chihuahua is the only dog I've ever known that never learned to growl or snarl. She will bark and challenge other dogs, but she loves all humans; just looking for new friends. Even if you hurt her, she'll just try to get away; will not bite.

Two of my neighbors have pit bulls. One is in a fenced area, the other runs free and shows up on my property occasionally. I carry a can of bear-strength pepper spray when I'm out and about my place just in case that dog decided I'm lunch.

Great job.

This does point up the value (need?) for carrying around home and farm.

Obviously the "inadequate .380" did the job well.

"Gun control" should mean hitting the target.

The breed should be abolished.
<Snip

I certainly disagree that the breed should be abolished...

I had a pit bull that was totally docile. It's brother, owned by my brother, was a deadly weapon. Although I do think they have the tendency to be unreliable, in certain environments they are great working dogs.

Recently there was an article in the news about a beautiful Lab that killed a person. Blame cannot be totally laid on the breed of dog no more than it can on any other animal. Nor would I ban guns - in fact, I'm an avid gun owner. Dogs and guns owners should be held responsible - not the dog or gun.

Take people like "some" football star. I saw first hand a place that he had or was associated with that had literally dozens of shacks that he kept his fighting dogs. Horrible and depressing. In my opinion - that guy and every person like him should never be allowed to be around dogs... no more than a pedophile should be around children. Where is that football star now? On TV making millions of dollars!

The owner of the dogs that attacked this neighbor is responsible. And he should be made to pay - and pay dearly!
