Interesting thread... New to the hay I have had my place 2 years. The fields were in bad shape from years of neglect. Last year was rebuilding. I will only have 11 acres for hay. The first cut this year was for 8 acres. Reclaimed the other 3 and it is not fit to cut yet. Sprigged with Tifton last year. right now have a mix of Tifton, common . trying to get rid of the Bahia. We had a pretty wet spring.. I did what was required for fertilizer and spayed for weeds. They cut and baled about 3 weeks ago. I got 645 bales for 8 acres. was told that was pretty good. sold 200 bales so far and someone is said they are coming to get 100 tomorrow.

I bought a maxilator hay grapple and I was able to get all the hay under cover in about 8 hours. That thing does have a learning curve.

Here are a few pictures.

Well we got another 4 to 5 inch of rain just today. That on top of what we got earlier this week was more than my shop pond could handle. It's running over the dam again this afternoon. 5th time this year.

Don't complain. My stock pond (about 1.3 acres) hasn't been full in nearly 4 years. The water level bottomed out nearly 2 years ago, at about 8' below the spillway. It only had a couple of feet left in it.
I promised the Good Lord that I wouldn't gripe about the rain ever again.

Sorry to hear that and I'm surely not complaining. I have been in your condition before myself so we have been taking it all in stride. Hopefully things will get better for you soon.

Bad year for us this year, couldn't get a dry 4 days in a row to get our alfalfa cut. Then we trusted the weather man,,, big mistake lost our whole first cutting and it hasn't quit raining since. I don't expect much from the second cutting because we can't get in to rake the trash out. Over 30 inches of rain here since the end of march.

This is the first time in 30 years of this that we lost more than a few bales. Hope everyone else's hay is going better.

I'm there with ya, bigfoot! I can't rememeber the last time the stock tabk was full, and it isn't much more than a puddle now. I need to mow areas that should be 10 feet under water! I'll have to restock it, if we ever get a rainy season again, as the egrets/herons found some easy pickings there, the last few years.

Without rain, my pastues won't carry the livestock through the summer, much less through winter, so I am sure that I'll be feeding hay, more heavily than usual. Just wish it would rain here, so everybody could have something to bale all summer!

Well going to try and cut today. It rained twice yesterday and once Friday. It's 20 to 30 percent until Thursday where it jumps up to 60 percent. Prolly try and cut around 25 acres and see. Wish me luck.

Good luck getting it baled before the rain comes. I just watched the weather and our only chance is Friday - Sunday so hopefully the farmers here can get some hay in before all the fields are ruined.
