Neighbor attacked by Pit Bulls

Two of my neighbors have pit bulls. One is in a fenced area, the other runs free and shows up on my property occasionally. I carry a can of bear-strength pepper spray when I'm out and about my place just in case that dog decided I'm lunch.

Why wait for the dog to attack before spraying?

There's a lot of discussion about pit bulls in this thread. People for and people against. People saying that pit bulls are commonly improperly identified. And there was a picture of one of these dogs. I think it's very telling that nobody said, hey - that isn't a pit bull. So even the people that defend pit bulls by saying 'pit bulls statistics are inflated due to mistaken identifies' can't tell sometimes.

I agree that's why I tried to verify the breed of the dogs. The State Police tagged them as pit bulls even though the owner was stating differently. Don't know if she was covering her assets or they are indeed the breeds she has stated. I guess perhaps the necropsy report will indicate the breed. I should have a copy of that next week sometime. No need to vilify an entire breed based on these two actors.

Because, you NEVER know how the irresponsible dog owner may react. The OP needs to cover all HIS bases.

Read my post a little more carefully, towards the end.

I wasn't referring to you Riptide.

I will go ahead to say exactly what I mean though.

If I were in the OP's position I would be prepared in every way, legally and morally. If I had been the person who saved a mans life I would not be looking for compensation from the dog owners because I was attacked too. The victim has every right to sue the dog owners for compensation. This is only MY opinion, this however doesnt mean I am right. It's just the way I FEEL about it.

Just a month ago in Wichita a young couple brought a brand new baby boy home and held it up to their fence to let one of their 5 pit bulls smell it or something? Lord only knows what or why they did that but the dog reached out grabbed the baby's leg and had it chewed clear off before either of the parents (using that word very lightly) could get it loose.

I am one of maybe a million people who read that article that have no words for this situation just unbelievable anger in my heart and sorrow for the baby its sickening what motivates people to do the things they do. Hanging the basteds is what needs done but that's me. my .002

Yes there are idiots with guns I agree and idiots with dogs however the comparison of gun vs dog in this and all cases where someone makes that argument is pure crapolla. To compare a gun to a dog is insane a gun all by itself is not dangerous at all its an inanimate object, where as a dog is a thinking living breathing creature capable on its own to act in anyway it feels like or has been trained to act or has the genetics to be aggressive which this breed is bred for.

Please give me enought credit to realize that a dog is a living breathing animal as compared to an inanimate object such as a firearm.

That said, more people are killed each year by negligence discharges with firearms than by dog attacks. What's that say about the people in general who should control/train/socialize thier animals?

Ultimately what it comes down to is people are labeling certain breeds as being dangerous. I get that, they're playing statistics. The EXACT same thing happens with guns and other things as well. Ironic enough, generally the news can't get a breed of dog correctly, and likewise, they can't seem to identify a firearm correctly:laughing:

Like most who are "anti pitt bull", to some extent I felt the same way until I got to work with the breed firsthand within my own family.

Insurance companies are going after "dangerous breeds" of dogs, sooner or later they will be going after gun owners. Personally, I think of insurance companies as legallized organize crime.

Then again, look at the state the OP lives in and that states governments views on guns. To some exent, the laws telling private citizens what they can or can't own per dog breeds needs some catching up to that states firearms laws on what private citezens can or can't own.

Tim, I think the post from the victim's daughter says is all. I have not read a single post in this thread that did not commend you for your action and feel deep concern and pity for the victim. As far as I'm concerned the only information that's important about the dogs is who owned them and why they were not controlled better as well as why they did not have shots. I think talking of breeds and viciousness is a red herring. The owner of the dogs should be held responsible for all damages done. Of course, you can't get blood out of a turnip and you can't get money out of a person who has none. Sadly, owning a dangerous animal doesn't require intelligence nor social responsibility.

Absolutely agree..

OK, you want to compare pit bulls to guns. To make it simple, there is almost one gun for every person in the country. Get the number of pit bulls and other dangerous dogs and maybe we can make a valid comparison. Without numbers, any attempt to compare dogs vs. guns is bogus.

And I ask again, why does anyone need a pit bull or any other aggressive breed? No one has so far justified having one.

Lastly, there was a report in the paper this morning about 3 cops. They cuffed a perp, the guy's 80 pound rott came out of the car and attacked the cops. One of them shot and killed the dog. Someone filmed it with their cell phone & put it on YouTube. 3.7 million hits. Now there have been threats on the cops' lives & they have been taken off field work. Some people are nuts.

This incident where Tipster saved his neighbor's life, it doesn't really matter if they were pit bulls or not--the same concerns about pit bulls apply to any aggressive breed.

If anything, you should learn statistics can be a very slippery slope LOL

One gun for every person in the US? How many guns are owned by individuals that skew those stats that show "on averge" that every one person owns a gun? Don't know about you, but I've got more guns than toes and fingers combined (oops, I sold them all, forgot about that, have all the paperwork as well). I know a couple of guys that have at least 30 or more guns. How does that skew the stats? I can't be the only one who knows people that have problems with collecting firearms LMAO

You know how many firearms I've owned as a civilian has killed people? None. You know how many dogs I've had that have ever bit a person? None.

I saw the video of the Hawthorn police department where they shot the dog. The police could of handled it better. Don't you know that now in some states it's ILLEGAL to video the police??? Why? The sad fact is the way some police departments are heading with how they're handling things, it makes me wonder.

All that said, I agree with you completely that the breed doesn't matter, what does matter is the OP took action and saved his neighbors life. I would do the same.

Well Sigarms I will give you credit for knowing a dog is alive but grant me this observation on my part...

For a guy who has Sigarms and what appears to be a pit bull as an avatar pic and no tractors what exactly do you stand for this is a tractor forum? Its a free country and all but the comparisons you keep making are all contradictory from my point of view. my .002

To the OP Tim, fwtw my family will be praying for the gentleman that was attacked and hoping he has a speedy recovery and his family.
