Just a month ago in Wichita a young couple brought a brand new baby boy home and held it up to their fence to let one of their 5 pit bulls smell it or something? Lord only knows what or why they did that but the dog reached out grabbed the baby's leg and had it chewed clear off before either of the parents (using that word very lightly) could get it loose.

I am one of maybe a million people who read that article that have no words for this situation just unbelievable anger in my heart and sorrow for the baby its sickening what motivates people to do the things they do. Hanging the basteds is what needs done but that's me. my .002

I've got to ask, what did the kid do, and was the dog normally tied to a chain?

The kid was with me and the father and we were just about to the dog and his hair stood up and snarled. The kid didn't touch the dog, but I petted him to settle him down. I just didn't want to take the chance that he might lite after a little kid.

Maybe a 12 year old cousin being bit extensively in the face by a shepherd a few years before that was still on my mind; I don't know.

The dog was chained maybe 16-18 hours a day when we were at work or at night. I didn't have a kennel, just a dog house.

The dog was very docile most of the time except that and for another minor incident a year or so before that.

I hated to take him behind the woodshed, and that was one of the hardest things i had to do and bothered me ever since and that was 30+ years ago.

Chaining a dog the majority of the day only increases the odds that the dog will show agressive behavior, let alone the other issues you're bringing to a "social" pack animal. Now, do that with a bully breed of some sort, and you've gone past the point being an idiot.

They should do the same thing with that dimwit who ran over his two year old daughter with his mower to boot.

The combination of large molosser breeds, including pit bulls, rottweilers, presa canarios, cane corsos, mastiffs, dogo argentinos, fila brasieros, and their mixes are statistically by far the most dangerous dogs. It's not even close.
That is as expected, these dogs have been selectively bred for violence...it's what they do. Owning a dog of this type puts a person at risk of great liability. This risk needs to be mitigated. Some municipalities require large insurance polices to keep a dog as such.

I will admit I have encountered some of these dogs that seem non aggressive or even friendly. I will also admit that I am never at ease in the presence of one of these animals and I would not consider keeping one for any reason whatsoever.

Many of these dogs are used as guard dogs. To protect home and family. The ones that we have owned do this very well. Our dogs are controlled by fence and on the rare occasions that they are outside of a fence they do have a shock collar on them. No stranger approaches our dogs unless we have a leash on them. They do sometimes react to strangers if suprised. We lock them up when children are around. We have never considered our dogs as vicious and we have never had any issues with our dogs attacking people. The guard type dogs are extremely dedicated, loyal, and protective of their owners. That's the part that attracts us to this type of dog. They are a potentially loaded gun and need to be watched no matter how warm and fluffy they seem to be. They are tremendous responsibility for a dog owner if cared for properly.

That's un (bleeping) believable. Some people are too stupid and irresponsible to have kids, let alone dogs.

I've often said that if my dog ever bit anybody I'd shoot it myself... but I raise a dog to be social and we are out in public places, as much as possible. If I suddenly can't trust my pet it isn't fair to the dog or to other people to keep it alive. I'm not disagreeing with you, we just have different reasons for keeping our dogs.
