Since the head was actually warped, I'd put a straight edge across the block too. Did the machine shop tell you how much they took off? Was it over .025"? Forgot to ask you if the cross-hatching was still apparent in the cylinder liners, and if there was a ridge, and if so how big?

As Bob mentioned, check the block. I would spend the money on new head bolts also since it was warped.

well i got the head back and boy does that thing look nice, I asked the shop forman about the head and he told me it was 7 thousand out and a typical head gasket can take 5 thousands out so it was 2 thousands out and theey shaved it down 7 thousands, he also said most shops go by 10 thousands but they dont do that and they only will take off what is needed unless asked to do it by ten thousands, I also asked him about the head bolts and he said that he would reuse them if it was his engine but that call was up to me

yea there was still cross hatch hone marks in the cyls and no bad vert lines, when you say ridge do you mean that the liners stick out i tiny bit from the block ? in the cyls I didnt notice any ridge, I can throw a gauge in there and ck for taper in 2 of the cyls but with a eng with only 69hrs on it I really didnt think it as somthing I would need to do, and they took 7 thousands off the head so i guess that would be .007

Yeah, seven thousandths (.007") is just a clean-up. You're OK. The distance the liners stick out from the block is called projection, it's supposed to be there. By ridge, I meant that area in the top of the cylinder liner where the piston rings expand from combustion and roll, and the piston changes direction. Usually .003" to .005" is tolerable before rings start to break. Depends on the engine. Don't need the taper gauge either if all of the cross hatching is still there.

on these head gaskets is there a top and bottom i see that both sides are not the same

Yep. The bottom side is relieved for liner projection I believe, and may have a copper ring laminated in it.
