2013 Hay Season

We are in southeast GA. I have seen wet summers before, but this is the time in nearly 35 years of baling hay that I have ever bogged a tractor and baler down. The heavy rains really started for us back in Dec and other than a few breaks it's been fairly steady. Our problem now (at least in our area) is that the water table is so high that there's just no place for the water to go. Normally a 1/2 inch of rain is just enough to settle the dust, but a 1/2 inch of rain this year will leave water standing in the field.
But..... you know it's a mixed blessing. Other than the problems getting in the fields, the rain sure has resulted in some good wheat and oats yields and our dryland corn is looking great. We have some really good hay also, just need a clear 2+ weeks to get it.

Yes sir. We are going to have to get the backhoe out there at some point. Well..... not the ones in the picture. We are planning to take that field out of hay and put it back in row crops next year. We are replacing it with a newly leased hay field.

We have sandy loam soil,never seen it get wet enough to rut,the unground springs you can't see have got a tractor and fertilizer truck before but I have a lease place that's black land and a light rain will ruin your day and have black mud everywhere piles up on cutter bar,its not fun at all even with a heavy dew.

About halfway through now . 650 round bales done and about 500 3x3 squares to do , inch and a quarter of rain day before yesterday but it is so dry it just dissapeared . There will be no more hay after this cut ......It will be all winter wheat come fall

That's what my fields looked like too. We had nearly 3" Friday-Sunday. It helped, but we have dust again on the roads. We will need a bunch more rain if we are going to get another cutting.

well we finally put some hay on the ground today, will ted it as quick as sun gets on tomorrow then rake and bale hopefully. man it's been the worst hay season in many years.
