Neighbor attacked by Pit Bulls

Thomas, I didn't say pits were bred to kill humans, just to kill. I think that's basically correct. My main point is - I don't think you'll read in paper or on news that a collie attacked a child, etc. Nor a poodle, etc. Just like you'd have a hard time (impossible?) to train a pit bull to point quail.

Anyway, very glad to hear the friend is finally home from hospital. Whew, what an ordeal for him! I'm still concerned for my friend and his grandchildren living so close to that rascal chained up.

Collies can be very protective and aggressive. My MILs is. And poodles, really? Those are some of the most biting dogs ever. Who here hasnt had some lady's poodle try to bite them? :)

I was actually "attacked" and bitten by a collie as a child. I say attacked because I was standing still and didn't approach or provoke the animal in any way. Nobody read about it in the paper because my injuries were minor--only broken skin and minor bruising. I have disliked the breed ever since.

My theory on this is that any dog breed can and will bite, and that large dogs are not inherently more prone to bite. However, when a large and powerful dog bites someone the chances of serious injury are much greater, so there are more injuries and more press reports of attacks by large breeds.

How many children are eaten by poodles on a weekly basis? Tired of hearing about other dogs bites when a pit type dog bites, it clamps like a vise. Also tired of people coming up with other names to call their pit bulls and claiming the differences while the bite is still like a vise.

Undoubtedly there is more than one breed of dog that can attack and maim people. Don't the police often use German Shepherds?

However, with the police dogs, both the dog and handler typically have very good training.

In this case, the dogs were out of the owner's control, and they let the two dogs out to do pack-hunting. Most of the problems with the Pit Bulls (and related breeds) is that the owners have no formal training, and no control over their dogs.

Agreed dang yappy poodles are face biters and probably responsible for more scars in kids faces than other dogs (my cheek can attest to it.) The Collies are beautiful but also very protective of THEIR Human Children. My brother was bitten by a collie that was chained up and broke free leaving 4 or 5 puncture wounds in his calf and bruising up his leg.

Yet again, the chaining of a dog leads to aggression and given their biological imperative toward needing activity and social contact in some form of a pack to which to belong, there is some evidence of actual psychosis in these poor mistreated animals.

Personal anecdote deleted to return this thread to Timster's heroic act.

I will be glad to continue to participate in educating ( i.e., arguing against the pitbull and other bully breeds being inherently bad) on another thread, if someone else cares to start one, otherwise I'm done.

Thanks again Timster!
