American Bulldog,

What is the model # of your pump?

and or

Maybe show a picture

I will take some pictures today. I wish I knew the model number of the pump, can't find it. I know how to adjust the creep, very easy. I will show woodlandfarms how to do it.

I don't believe that the treadle works the way you say. I am assuming "oomph" is torque, or pressure to the wheel motors. The treadle controls a swashplate in the pump that directs the flow of the fluid. The maximum pressure is fixed, by some sort of adjustment on the pump.

Anyways, I have tried everything to get up the hills. Light treadle, heavy treadle, etc. Mine works much better in reverse, as your's does. I can stall the motor going uphill in reverse, if I mash the treadle down.

When you step on the pedal it changes the angle of the swash plate. The further you step the greater the change of that angle.
If you step on it all the way down on flat land the tractor will obtain maximum speed and maximum flow through the wheel motor circuit.
If you step on it all the way down going up a steep hill with a load, the tractor will have to work very hard to maintain that maximum flow and sometimes it is too much for the engine, so it will bog down.
By letting off the pedal, you reduce the angle of the swash plate, you flow less fluid through the pump, the engine can maintain the load and you can continue on your way, although at a slower pace.
So, if you are having problems going up a hill, don't mash the pedal. Let off the pedal.

I am having problems, but the problem isn't the engine bogging down. It just doesn't go. Engine stays at full RPM, and the fluid blows by the swash plate. (I guess) Doesn't matter whether it is fully mashed down, halfway mashed down, or 1/4 mashed down. Does the same thing.

OK here are some pics of the tram pump. Very hard to photograph.

The first one is looking in from the right side. The adjustment on the right controls the creep. Clockwise makes it creep forward, CCW reverse. A simple wrench and Allen key is all you need to adjust. The adjustment on the left has something to do with the swash plate control from the treadle, maybe controls the maximum swashplate deflection?

This next photo is from the left side, there is another adjustment for the treadle swashplate control. I believe that this one is reverse, and the other is forward. There are two other adjustments that are hard to see. One on top just to the left of the the brass test port, and one on the back of the pump. That is all the adjustments I see on this pump.

Here are a couple more pictures:

I see. Bummer.

I wonder if your maintaining pressure when you mash it down going up hill. Starting to sound as though either pump isn't or the wheel motors can't.

Pretty sure that the tram pump is not developing enough pressure in the forward direction. Acoording to PT, the motor should stall before the tram pump gives up. Everything works fine in reverse, so I doubt it is the wheel motors.

Now, if we could only figure out which adjustments to make on the tram pump.........

I have a PT 422 and have been running Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic oil for about 12 years. It came with 5w30 weight I believe. I am able to climb steeper hills using the synthetic oil. It made a significant difference and was well worth. It was not cheap since the machine holds about 10 gallons of oil.

I've been adding a quart of Mobil1 at each filter change. Tractor has enough power for me on hills. Will usually spin the wheels before bogging down.

Having the extra 3 horsepower helps according to Terry.
