Pretty sure that the tram pump is not developing enough pressure in the forward direction. Acoording to PT, the motor should stall before the tram pump gives up. Everything works fine in reverse, so I doubt it is the wheel motors.

Now, if we could only figure out which adjustments to make on the tram pump.........

If you install a hyd gage in the wheel motor /pump circuit, you can see what pressure is being developed at any time.

If your wheel motors are relieving at the pump relief pressure, that is about the best the pump and wheel motor circuit can do.

If the pump can not produce the pressure when called upon by a good wheel motor, it probably needs some work.

However, if the wheel motors are bypassing, and not developing the pressure, then the wheel motors need some work.

If the pump is tight and the wheel motors are tight, then you will see any pressure up the the relief pressure.

You might be able to put a gage in the pump bleed port.

I would use a 5000 psi hyd gage as some of those pumps can develop the pressure in that range.

My local Walmart has it on sale for $25/5qts at the moment.

All the best,

Peter

I have a PT 422 and have been running Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic oil for about 12 years. It came with 5w30 weight I believe. I am able to climb steeper hills using the synthetic oil. It made a significant difference and was well worth. It was not cheap since the machine holds about 10 gallons of oil.

My 1445 has a few more HP:), but when hot, it doesn't go straight up a 30 degree slope with the mower on. (i.e. pushing 4500lbs, total) Chains aren't the issue, just hot oil bypass. I suspect that it loses twice, once in pump blow by and again on the motor blowby. I have never tried backing up the hill to see if it makes a difference.

I have no experience with 5W50 or 15W50; I have been running 10W40 that it came with.

All the best,

Peter

Having the extra 3 horsepower helps according to Terry.

PT went to the thicker oil after my machine. You are most of the way there. It may not make much difference going to 15w50. Has anybody tried this and seen a difference.

I took advantage of the sale price and put in 17 gallons of 15W50 Mobil 1 for a 600 hour oil change. I haven't mowed hills yet. The steering seems stiffer, and the drive seems tighter, but that's entirely subjective.

I used an oil transfer pump, with two old hoses and had the whole thing done in twenty minutes. Having parked the tractor with the left side wheels up on blocks, I opened the drain hole and drained out about a cup of oil. I think it took longer to add the fresh oil than it did to get the old oil out. No sludge on the bottom, but the oil had darkened significantly from new.

I'll post an update when I have a chance to have the tractor out on the slopes under load.

Accumulating the 1 gallon plastic milk jugs for the used oil was the long part. :)

All the best,

Peter

Peter, have you started your PT in real cold weather with that oil? Like on a frost morning? I only ask because with 10-40 that I run even the 65HP engine is kinda dragging in the winter on 30 degree starts.
