Are you broadcasting rye grass seed on top of a pasture already in grass?
What kind of germination rate does that give?
Just wondering
We usually broadcast rye on bare loose soil or at least light disk it in a little on existing grass.

Foreman, I have a couple of welders and a plasma, I can give the hernia a go!! We'll have you "back in the saddle" before you know it. Shoot , a young guy like you, you will be pitching hay by Monday:laughing:
FG19, you are ahead of me, I have oats for my deer plot, there ready but I have been slow to get it done. Hopefully tomorrow after I do some asphalt work, I can get it done. Went to 3 feed stores looking for some clover, all sold out? got some Austrian winter peas to add to the oats and fertilizer though.

Don't know about FG but I broadcast ryegrass seed on our Bermuda pasture. I haven't put it out yet. Need to mow first. Year before last I drug the pasture with an old box spring after seeding . Last year I didn't get around to it. Think dragging helped. Hopefully some day I'll get a fence built so can disc and plant oats and be able to let cows in couple hours a day.

Foreman, I found at day three a decrease in pain enough to dc prescription pain pills and right at day 7 could sleep the whole night. Hang in there!

Yes, it is going over established pasture, but the pastures are pretty well grazed by the livestock, since we haven't had much rain, this summer. If we get a rain this weekend, germination rate should be good. In fact, even when there has been more grass on the pastures, and I have broadcast over it, I've had good germination (80%?) and growth, if we get the rain needed. I normally wait until October to put out the ryegrass, but with the cool front coming, and rain predicted, I am "rolling the dice"! I had planned on putting out 25 lbs/ac., but I think I ended up putting out 35-37 lbs/ac. :shocked: Oh well, if it all comes up and we have any rains, I'll have pastures for grazing, so won't have to feed much hay! Yes bindian, I should have driven faster! I was enjoying being on the tractor again, as I haven't needed to brush hog, so guess I was in my "own little world".
Odd thing: I have lost several pounds this summer, with the work load and heat. Been great for my stamina to get through the day, but those darn 50 lb bags seem heavier to get them dumped into the spreader. I guess I should have been eating Special K for breakfast, since their old commercial said, "Keep the muscle, Lose the fat". :laughing:
I thought about putting out some oats, but it takes more of that per acre, and one should disc it. Rye seems to grow just because it wants to, and in areas that not all things can get a foothold, such as where one is just barely above rock. So, I decided to wait and try the oats another season, as I really don't have the time to do it right. Maybe I'll put some out in some smaller pens/pastures, as a test area, next month, if I have more "free" time. (Then again, I might use that free time for riding horses, or flying!
)
