1200-1250# rd bale is a load for anything under 50 hp and I'd choose 70 hp.

I would agree with this generalization. Some here say a 40hp tractor will lift that weight with no problem...and they will, but if you ballast the tractor up properly, along with the payload, 40 HP tractors get a little "doggy".
If the OP is trying to stay under 7000 pounds so he can trailer it, a JD 4520 or 4720 would fit the bill.

Is your trailer capable of hauling 7K of payload, or is that the combined GVW? My tractor weighs 3800lbs, the loader is 1100lbs, the bucket weighs 300lbs, and my standard counterweight is 1350lbs....that will just squeeze on a 10K GVW trailer with a little room to spare.

Can he buy a 4720 for 23,000?

Ha Ha...maybe if he is a "world class" negotiator! I didn't think that was one of his constraints...my main "take aways" were:
1) No "off" brands
2) Wants to handle large round bales.
3) Wants to keep weight below 7000 pound.

* I'd like to look at a pre-owned, well maintained, low hour tractor. 12-15K. Plenty of 30-40 hp clean, low hour, private owner tractors in this range. I'd borrow the money from my bank at 6% over a 48 month note, looking at 375'ish ballpark on the 15K monthly note.

* On the other hand, Mahindra (for one) will put me in a brand new 4035 w/loader, 5-year warranty, for 23K'ish. Low monthly note of 325'ish for 60/72 months. Very do-able in my budget. I imagine other dealers might offer similar long-term, low interest, financing

I hate say it, but maybe a skid-steer is more up to tasks in that price range? Just guessing here, as I am not all that familiar with the offerings.

I'd have to say that for the $23K, I'd be looking hard at the Kioti DK40HST or the LS R4041H or even the R4047H.

Just my :2cents: that I happened to find today. ;)
