The Wallenstein Arriveth: My New BX62s 3PT Chipper

/ The Wallenstein Arriveth: My New BX62s 3PT Chipper #11
I've had my BX62 for three years and used it more this year than any of the previous ones. It took me a while to get over the initial fright of it snatching branches out of my hands and (loudly!) gobbling them down and spitting them out...it is scary, at first!
As for the size of material it will take, I've found that it will easily take 4"-5" softwood, but can choke on hardwood (eg maple) of that size. It almost seems like it self-feeds too fast.
Having said that, my setup has some sort of problem not related to the chipper. When the chipper chokes on something too big and tough, it doesn't shear the bolt, nor (to my surprise and consternation) does it kill the tractor. Instead, the PTO clutch in the tractor starts slippping, and the revs of the tractor drop dramatically. This doesn't bode well for future tractor maintenance, so I've backed off on how large trees and branches I feed into the BX62. I suppose I could use a lower grade shear bolt, but I don't think that's a good solution either.
Anyway, the only other issue I've had is clogging with spruce needles...you just need to run some heavier stuff through with the branches or let them lay until after the needles fall off before chipping.
I don't like carrying tools in the loader bucket (I tend to forget, which ends up badly), so I bolted a chainsaw scabbard to the outside of my chute so I could carry the saw into the woods.
You are really going to enjoy that machine. At least the neighbours will match your chipper when they turn green with envy.

This is really the bigger reason I went with the BX62 over the BX42. I don't honestly intend on chipping much more than 4", as a 6" limb is pretty darn big, and makes good campfire wood! :) I like having the extra grit on the machine, though! Thanks for the tips here.

Could you post a pic of that sometime? That sounds really handy, and I would like something like that for my chainsaw, too!

I personally would not want the PTO clutch to slip before a shear bolt or PTO shaft slip clutch. I think I would add a PTO slip clutch before internal damage occurred on the tractor.

I just received my BX62S-ORA. It just matches my Kubota color. Have not tried it yet but when I spun it up it makes a loud, rushing air, hoary, scary sound. I traded in my old BX42 so I'm aware of how the unit snatches and pulls trees. Friends would end up launching trees at intake chute from fear of the snatching, pulling effect of the old '42. The ONLY problem I've experienced with the old Wally was pine needles plugging the discharge chute. I get over anxious and can't wait for the little thinned pines to "dry out". Can you believe I now have hundreds & hundreds of small pines that are cut & piled awaiting chipping. However, I'm going to patiently??? wait til this coming spring to chip because then they will be "dry". My problem is that in a couple areas where I thinned the pines, I waited too long and the thinned pines are larger than the '42 could handle just by a scoosh. Besides its really nice to get a new implement that you know, in advance, will work & work well!!

Congrats! I can't believe how green it is. I sadly have a green one too (for my kubota!). You'll get a lot of use out of it and be surprised at what it'll chip up. When I got mine I had a blast chipping up everything in sight. One thing I've noticed is my neighbors have become more friendly all of a sudden :)

Thanks for the tip here, as one of the first things I plan to do with it (whenever it stops raining!) is chip up the top of a big pine that was pushed over by my dirt guys to clear room for a driveway for our new home.

And now that it has rained about 2" today, I guess I will have to wait to give that a try for a while. :(

 I am worried about this, too!

Yeah, the paint job is REALLY top notch on this thing!

And, if you ever want to intimidate your neighbors, just fire up the chipper and figure out a way to project the ending scene from "Fargo" on the wall of your barn.

Good idea for Halloween next year!

That right there is one of the biggest comforts I found in buying this machine.

I grew up in western MN and had a lot of fine Mennonite folks around our community. I have always really respected and appreciated their quality craftsman skills, as well as their way of life!

Can't wait to put her to work and report back! If only it would stop raining... (Something we don't say too often here in TX, ha!)
