A little off topic.

A couple of years back I injured two fingers on my right hand.

Rope starting was agony.

I bought a Stihl 250c with easy start and have no complaints.

Easy to start... almost no effort on the pull because pulling winds a spring.

The 250c is/was the largest easy start with no tool adjustments for chain tension.

Several neighbors have since bought the 170 with easy start.

Mostly for storm clean up which happens a couple times each year.

I've always had Husky saws but I really like the Stihl pro chains. They seam to keep the initial sharp edge for longer than any other brand I've tried.

Yes. I don't have any info as to which model of chain, I just buy them for my Husky from a local Stihl/ Husky dealer who sells to loggers.

Went to buy an extra chain recently for one of my Stihls and the guy pulled two possible chains off the rack. I asked to compare price points and one chain was ridiculously high. Turns out it was a carbide chain for firefighters to cut through just about anything! I chose to pass. They told me it could not be resharpened either! Wow, throw away expensive carbide; I'll stick with the regular Stihl chain thanks.:thumbsup:

I guess everybody's experience with smaller, powerful saws are much different than my own. My Echo cuts continuously without overheating until I have to refill. The tank and chain oil will last a couple of hours which is about as long as I care to saw without taking a break. The chain stays sharp right up until you bury it in the dirt, then I can sharpen it in under 5 minutes, on the saw.

Other than the run time on a tank, that's what I see with my little 170....only 8.5oz tank.

The Stihl MS290 would be a good saw. If you want a pro grade saw look at a MS261 or MS361. The 361 is a good all around saw, if I had 1 saw that would be the size I would want.

MS261s are awesome saws. I have one as well as an 026 still in good shape. Both great saws and I don't see any drop in quality from old to new. Less vibrations on the MS261 than the 026, but both are great saws.

I've heard many folks with the same opinion.....almost a cult follwing for the 026, it seems, so I'm sure you're right. It seems to be a really nice balance of size and power. There is a local guy here with a long-running CL ad showing piles of pro series Stihl models. He lists the 026, and I've thought about contacting him to see how much he's asking, or if he has a 260/261.

I have a 024 Super. The 024 super has the 024 bore (42mm) but the 026 stoke. When I got the saw it was locked up from from being ran with straight gas. I put a MS260 piston and cylinder (44.7mm) in it which is bigger than a 026(44mm). It is a good little saw but it is still not over powered.

I think the MS261 is completely different than a MS260. I think the 261 has .5 more horsepower.
