Sounds like you have been screwing with everything on this tractor.

Yep :D

I am now interested to see if the turbo helps!

No way I'd have bought a tractor this small with a Cab...

I'm not considering whether or not the Kubota makes enough power for his needs, that's irrelevant. Why doesn't it start correctly? What about the hydraulics/etc. problems which are independent of it? Those are problems I would get fixed as #1.

I can't wait to see the thing turbocharged, except long enough for these other problems to be resolved first. :)

Please bump up the timing. It will improve it.
As an aside I had a L3130 briefly and was sadly disappointed with its lack of power. If the engine block had had all the necessary porting I would have turbo-ed it but instead I just bought the 5740.

It's a mystery man! :D

Thru this thread I've developed respect for Fred. Before this thread I thought he was just suffering from severe buyer's remorse. Now I think his expectations and standards are a bit higher than most of us. His disappointment in this tractor comes primarily from Kubota's weight/HP ratio inadequacies. Then put Fred's standards on top of that and you have a conflict of interest.

So now Fred is doing what he knows best. He's going to attempt to overcome this ratio problem. When he gets this tractor turbo'd this ratio will change dramatically. Most of the things he dislikes about the tractor will go away. But the tractor's basic personality will still be there, slightly hidden, but still there.

I worry that Fred still will not be happy with it. Nothing wrong with the tractor. Nothing wrong with Fred. Just a lack of compatability between the two. Many Men/Women suffer the same incompatability.

Great thread though. I'm now firmly in the "Fred's Cheerleading" group. I'm anxious to see the results. GO FRED!!!

C'mon Roger, ... guys. IMO a guy who can set up a degree wheel and knows cam lift is usually checked at .050" (minus 'ramps') isn't likely 'screwing with' his machine any more than my internist is screwing with my guts when he checks my vitals. Credit where it's due & all that, but our guy is hardly going in blindly, and coulda-shoulda-wouldas went out the window a few pages ago.

Besides, Fred is tweaking his own tractor, not one of ours, and he knows the risks if there are any. He seems to be teaching us as much as we're helping him ... if that's why were here. Fred, the spirit of your followers may be drowned out by the din of nay-sayers, but I'd "never pass up a learning opportunity". "You go", bro'!

Fred, This might help some. As you are aware, Bobcat used the V2003T (56 HP) in some models but in same frame without Turbo they used the V2203 (46 HP). So I can't be positive of the specs on V2003 aspirated engine. Comparing specs of V2003T vs V2203 almost everything matches (injection timing, compression, valve lash, etc.) except valve timing.

Compression test in Bobcat specs. fall in line with your findings:

Here is valve timing the V2003T;

Here is valve timing on the V2203;

Injection timing on both is 18 BTDC.

A problem I have run across occasionally on Kubota engines with power complaints was governor spring setting. Spring were set so engine RPM had to drop well below the normal 150 - 200 RPM decrease before governor would release the fuel rack. Caused the engine to lug down too far that it could begin to recover, just a thought to check.
Turbo will definitely add more power but might as well check everything while you are at it.

That's exactly how my Brother's L3240 acts. Once that rpm fall happens it can't recover. Very frustrating.

If 99% of us had this problem with our tractor we would take it to the dealer for them to fix it. Something is not adding up here.

Looks like there is a fix for this. With the spring setting.

I also have more respect for Fred than I did earlier. But the 'other problems' with the tractor need to be addressed before modifying, IMO...
