How to safely fell this fallen tree?

/ How to safely fell this fallen tree? #41
Just Me , But if I had the room to safely do it without dropping onto a building , etc... , I would notch the tree it is leaning into , ( A notch on opposite side of the leaner and prefer inline with the tree were the top came from ) , A small back cut of maybe 1/3 what would actually be used to fall the tree . Then cut a notch in tree that top came from and back cut it to fall directly into leaner and current " Catch " tree . Like Domino's . it will come down .

Controlled Fall.jpg

Above is a Very Crude Drawing of what I am describing .

Untitled.jpg

How I would make cuts on both trees .

NOW , With that being said , That is Me and I know my experience level . We used to do it all the time cutting Lodgepole pine from 12" to 20" diameter for firewood . Would almost always get a hanger every weekend due to the close proximity that the tree's grew to each other . If We did , We would cut a notch in the " Catch " tree , small back cut , then drop a third tree right down the chute . Not a professional by any means , just been around for awhile . Not a fan of the cable idea unless you can get it Way UP , like at least half way , Bad things can happen if it decides to go the other direction .

In 2005 When old mobile home was removed from property , first had to remove 2 100+ year old ponderosa pines . First was a piece of cake , 10' from mobile on the downhill side , Extension ladder , 1" Choker attached to 150' of 1/2" cable attached to rear of F250 4x4 down the hill . Had Choker 25' up , 34" in diameter , fell exactly were I wanted .

Second tree was Scary . Had barely 10" between mobile and tree maybe 36" off the ground were I started back cut , Thus my reason for the angled down back cut , to hopefully prevent kick back of tree . Everything went pretty smooth until neighbor , who was in truck , got side tracked playing with the radio . Buzzing along making back cut thinking " Dang , with tension on the cable this mother should be going already ? " . Well , when the hinge was small enough , the tree settled back and pinched the saw in the back cut and that little jolt got the neighbors attention . Mashed the Gas and When that tree came off the stump , It came off the Stump . Butt end of tree was app. 12' or so down across the old lawn from the stump . That tree was the biggest at a little over 38" at the butt end , tried counting rings but when I got to 105 , I gave up .

Again Though , I know my limits and experience . Just Depending on were that hanger is , Is it safe or can it fall towards buildings , cars , roads . May be awhile before mother nature brings it down , thus my opinion only , that if possible , I would sacrafice a second tree to bring it down .

I haven't read all the posts but hope at least a few suggested to leave the tree alone. Lots of smart and experienced people get killed in these situations because they are so unpredictable. They don't call them "widowmakers" for nothing.

On a few leaners I have used a small electric wench run from a +12V car battery. I secured it to another tree and used enough cable and tow straps to stay far from the leaning tree.

Things can go very wrong quickly with trees, ropes and chains. So be careful.

In the pictures below, you will note a tree that I have on my property that recently found itself in a precarious position. The noted tree is the TOP 80 feet of what was a 150 foot tree. It was blown off the top of the tree in a recent storm, came straight down and lodged itself in the ground and is now leaning against another tree. I need to safely remove this "tree top" so that it has a controlled fall. The third picture is the base of the tree top that is sitting on the ground. How should I do this?

If I cut to fell it as you would a normal tree, it could just buckle on me I am thinking. The only way that I can see to do this safely is with a 50 + foot chain tied to the base and pull it away from the tree it is leaning on. Any thoughts? Any suggestions?

I'd just park my Massey Ferguson 35 with its 8000 pound timber winch about 150 feet away, connect the cable and pull the bottom of the log clear. Easy and pretty safe. That's why I keep the MF 35, for situations like this one.

Does a neighbour have a timber winch in your area?

Or you could wait it out and the wind will take it down. Set up a guessing game with the kids and plan an annual "tree-falling" party till it comes down.

And now for the rest of the story...I was successful in felling this broken tree. Wow...

In summary, I put an extension ladder up about 24 feet and connected a chain at that point. I connected that chain to a series of chain to stretch over 100 feet. I had estimated the top of this tree to be 80'. Pulling 90 deg from the lean, I tugged the chain with the tractor. It moved some, gave another couple of good tugs and down it came right where I thought it should fall. Measuring the tree after it was on the ground I measure 81'. Good guess.

Yes, it worked out well but I was definitely nervous for about 5 mins not knowing what might happen. I had an escape plan and glad I didn't need to use it.

Did you feel the tree or fell it?
Curious, was your escape plan for when you were on the ladder or pulling the 100' of chain to bring it down? What exactly was your plan?
Glad you got it down safely. Any pics? For if there are no pics, technically it never happened....

All I can say is that I'm glad it's down and no damage to anything especially to my body.

No pictures, only before however I guess I could take one of that beast laying on the ground.

Happy New Year to you all.

The tree is on the ground.
